Hi,
having been thoroughly screwed up the bum by XFX and the scam company that sold me my 7900 I'm trying to replace the card with the meager £58 they gave me. I know that's impossible so I'm looking to spend £100 bang for buck on a card from this trusty retailer OcUK. Any suggestions would be brilliant,

I should probably mention what it's for. I'm a 3D animation student struggling to afford life that enjoys playing online shooters, currently addicted to the latest Unreal. So I'm happy to play at a resolution of 1024x768 high settings when gaming but when working I need two monitors running at 1280x1024 each as button real estate and reference space is essential in the media workplace.

As you know, Ive already suggested a 9600GT, the bottom end OcUK Vanilla one is £103. But Ill let the experts on here offer up some best bang for buck option.

+1, except if you were to go with a 3850, you would be better off with a 512MB one for £94 :), and 8600s aren't very good, compared to 9600s and 3850s, the extra £30 is more than worth it.
 
seen as Vachyre is off shooting things, ill answer this.

There is no room for an additional £30. His limit is £58, anything above this needs to come from the goodwill of his parents, so £100 is the absolute limit.

It does look like the 9600GT is the best bet however.

However I personally think the 3850 has more power if it's overclocked 800+mhz

So depends if you want to OC or not IMO.
 
wrong site to say this on but i dont intend to overclock it. I want a card that runs comfortably w/out tinkering. I had to underclock my 7900 in the end just to make it run :(
 
ehh? I didn't see mention of a 7800GT anywhere in this thread.

Anyway...it will be a huge upgrade for sure.
 
the 7900 is somewhere between the unnamed etailer of doom and XFX, presumably lost and confirmed broke.

Ive winged Vachyre my old 7800GT to keep him going untill he replaces it. Anything is better than onboard 6200 graphics on an old mobo!

Anyway, back on track, what are Inno3D and Sparkles warranties like? they can both be had for a coupld of £ more than the OcUK one, with a 2 year manufacturer warranty over the OcUK 1 year....

Options are the HD3850 512mb or the 9600GT. £130ish get you the 8800GT, which is an excellent buy.

Can't go wrong with any of these cards to be honest. Just make sure you get any one of the above with 512MB ram. DO NOT get 256mb cards :).

*edit: lol, don't compare modern cards to the prone to fail(suck) 7900 series. those things had so many problems I'm supprised yours survived.

overclocking the HD3850 is easy (ATI even have there own program "overdrive" that lets you do it). If you get one like mine, the Gecube X-Turbo III, it comes pre overclocked and has a great dual slot cooler that is silent. I think it's within your price range.

Hi, probably you still remember me. Glad to hear that you gave up XFX eventually. Finding a better manufacturer is better than finding a better retailer. Anyway, back to the topic. All experts above have given you the recommendations and prices. For me, 9600GT is the favourite. But my second thought is that the choice has to be related to the games you like. Here is the benchies of the relevant cards on UT3:

Whoa, I didn't know the HD3850 did so well in UT3. Hell, they all pretty much clock to HD3870 speeds without too much trouble too!! .

As for my cards, I haven't overclocked them yet, I used to have a pair running in crossfire, but that current system is it bits and pieces while I wait for a new CPU.
As far as I know, these gecubes are some of the best for OCing, especially if you Vmod them.

But for the first time he has provided us with usefull info, the 3850 does look very nice. I asume Sapphire and HIS have Ok RMA? (ive had a Sapphire go pop and it was handled great).

Trouble is, you have to convince Vachyre away from his nVidia Fanboy-ism... :)

And in terms of OCing, I dont see how clocking an ATI with Overdrive would be any harder than clocking a nVidia with RivaTuner?

Oh, and about the retailer vs manufacturer. XFX have actually been limited but helpful, the etailer has basically sed **** off after losing the card and providing XFX with the wrong S/N...

second hand 8800GT bought from a reputable source, ie these forums! any 8800gt that is bought second hand should still have manufacturer warrenty just make sure not to buy asus, gainward, XFX and if you buy BFG make sure it hasnt been registerd for warrenty purposes or youll have to use the origanel owner to RMA it.

The OP has 7 posts.....he won't be seeing the MM here for awhile...and he won't find a 2nd hand 8800GT for 100 quid even here where there are constantly great deals to be had.
