Spec me a £100 Graphics Card

AAAHHHHH so he does, the drink has the better of me... nothing like a crappy football match to take the wind out of your sails

Ive got MM access and have been looking, but no, nobody seems to be selling any decent 8800GT's for anywhere near £100....

Id go for the 3850 512MB. Its a very good card at stock and just gets better when overclocked.
My preference for manufacturer is Powercolor, Sapphire and HIS (owned a few of their cards and didnt have much problems, but when i did they were all handled well).

OcUK also have their cheapish OEM 3850 cards and at least you deal with OcUK for warranty, which is good.

@Vach ~ I read through the entire thread regarding your dead 7900 and I can sympathise. The above 2 suggestions are the obvious choice, with the HD3850 512MB having the benefit of more mature drivers and being under £100.

If memory bandwidth is very important for your work you may want to consider an HD2900Pro for its 512 bit memory, which can be had for under £100 second-hand. Though I haven't got a clue if the 512 bit memory would make much difference as it wasn't entirely groundbreaking as far as gaming is concerned.

What? the 9600GT overclocks too you know so either way 9600GT is better.

What I mean is that games are becoming more and more shader intensive and I believe that the 320 shaders of the 3850 will perform better in future games.

I may be wrong, but similarly I kept saying the 320mb 8800GTS would not be enough for future games and people kept arguing with me and showing me various benchmarks....yet now it's generally accepted that 320mb is not enough VRAM even for lower resolutions. I just irrationally feel it in my bones :p

It's possible but based on benchmarks the 9600GT does very well even in shader intensive games with it's 64sp so with an overclock it should also benefit.

Besides, you can't directly compare the sp on the HD3850 and 9600GT, I agree with you on the 8800GTS 320MB though, that was never going to last very long with way memory usage had been increasing in games.

Yeah I know I may be wrong....TBH I have no idea how the 9600GT is so powerful.

I mean 2 of them in SLI just trails the 9800GX2 which doesn't really make any sense. 256 shaders vs 128 total?

Yep if you have a SLI mobo 2x9600GT is definintely the best for price/performance, it actually makes the 9800GX2 look bad. :)
