You should be able to switch between 5.1 and stereo in the sound card control panel. I'll be astounded if you can't, because that's how it worked for the X-Fi cards and also for Xonar cards. It's quick and simple. No need to touch the Windows speaker settings.
You'd still need to change in game though, if you're going to use headset as well as speakers when playing games. Although, maybe no reason why shouldn't just leave it on 5.1 I guess in game.
Your right, I just tested it, setting the Creative Software to -
Headphones = 5.1 in Windows
5.1 Speakers = 5.1 in Windows
2.0 Stereo = 2.0 Stereo in Windows
I guess I'm amazed that the software changes the Windows setting to 5.1 for the headphones! I didnt realise it would do that
BF4 sounds so much better, I'm really happy with the SBX stuff on the Stereo headphones it sounds really good and I can tell where stuff is coming from like I could with 5.1 speakers, ok the positional audio is not quite as good but its a hell of a lot better than normal Stereo through the headphones and the sound quality and general experience through the headphones is pretty good compared to my 5.1 speakers
If you have access to the MM, I have some Edifier Studio 1280T speakers sat in my wardrobe collecting dust - boxed and ready to go!
Thanks but I'm not sure what I want yet, might even stick my 5.1 setup as it sounds really good on the new sound card
