Spec me a 2.5gb switch

If OP made it clear he had a 1140Mbps w/ VM, this thread would've went quite differently.
Gigabit is generally around 940Mbps, if you have something beyond that it makes sense for you to want 2.5GbE+

running speedtest on a direct connection gives ms 1180/1190 on speedtest.net

same test over the cheap n cheerful TP link switch is giving me 930 Mb/sec
running via the Archer C6 puts speeds in the mid 500 mb/sec
think definitely for the sake of £100 or so its got to be worth throwing a 2.5gb switch upstairs for the 2 whole devices that can make use of it

Ah so now you've added a router into the mix as well. Everybody saying that you are getting a gigabit through your gigabit switches was correct.

Draw out a topology and explain what you're trying to do. What is the TP Link router doing currently?

nothing quite so completx or lavish

basically VM modem comes in down stairs with a single gigabit switch feeding the TV cabinet (LG C1,VM Box, Xbox and currently a Archer C6 for downstairs internet) theres a single Cat6 going upstairs from the 2.5gb port which feeds into the home office feeding into a switch feeding 2x PCs Xbox/PS5 and another Archer C6 for wifi duties upstairs

thinking about a 2.5gb switch upstairs and adding 2x ubuiqiti APs for wifi and bin the Archer C6s off

How are the Archer routers connected? If they're able to slow things down then it sounds like you have one network for devices connected to the VM hub, and another two networks for the devices connecting to the C6 routers.

Sounds like you'd need two 2.5GbE switches to cover everything from what you describe, but like you say, one upstairs would probably be sufficient as the devices downstairs don't sound like they're too demanding.
I wouldn't bother changing the AP's, unless there's a real reason for 1Gbps+ on the WiFi.

Did you decide what switch to get?

I think something like two Netgear GS110MX switches could work well for you - VM hub 2.5Gb port into one downstairs on the mGig port, link to the upstairs switch with the other mGig port which could negotiate at 10Gb if your cables are decent enough. Then the second mGig port on the upstairs switch can go to your desktop PC with its 2.5Gb interface.

This would fill up all the faster than 1Gb interfaces but it's a big jump in budget to do much more.

If you can get a fibre between the two switch locations then two Zyxel XGS1010-12 would give you more ports but limited to 2.5Gb on copper.

These are good little switches and were cheap last year, the xgs1250 will allow similar without the need for fibre transceivers but for some reason it seems strong money at the moment.

The QNAP QSW-2104-2T will give you 2x10 and 4x2.5 for reasonable money.

Ive tested 10GBASE-T (rj45) FS.com modules over cat6/cat5e cables at 10G and they run hella hot, so hot you cannot hold them and will burn you (the modules), this was used in a Zyxel XGS1210-12 switch.

so decided against it for now and sticking with 2.5Gb over cat6 for my home setup.

if/when i ever get fibre installed il move to it then, as for now no need.

That’s how they get. It’s not an issue.

Currently looking at the Zen wifi pro et12 kit.

Anyone have any experience of this kit?

Thinking one of these kits connected to the 2.5gb pot of my router down stairs then 2.5gb link upstairs feeding a single 2.5gb switch then my home office with a normally tv switch downstairs feeding my EV cabinet

I’m slightly conflicted because my job is to get people to buy the latest and greatest technology, even if they don’t really need it. And on the other hand, those are such a triumph of marketing BS that I’d be ashamed to sell them. And they’re ENORMOUS. And £700 a pair! That’s a lot of money just to scratch your 2.5GbE itch. But if you really want them, why not?

Thought about it as I do have one wireless link between floors, puts in some strong numbers in reviews but really its a lot of dough for very little up lift over the gear I have.

It sounds like you want a wireless link between upstairs and down stairs, the 6Ghz band won't penetrate many walls, so positioning and distance are going to be important, it is unlikely to give 2.5Gb connection between floors, if you land in the upper end of the 1-1.5Gb window you've been lucky, this may be enough for full speed for Gig1 but really these still really want wired backhaul for best bandwidth/performance.

Once you wire the backhaul they APs don't need so many radios and are cheaper.

Buy it from somewhere yu can return it, test it, let us know the results. :)

Yup I have direct attach cables and some of these modules, they all get toasty, I had to make sure good air flow was going over one of my cards or a NIC would drop out due to over heating.

Old HP qlogic dual 10Gb NIC in my backup NAS.

Aha caught red handed! This is why you keep pushing network newbies to buy expensive stuff when they don’t need it.

Bingo! Got you now. :cry::p

slight update,

stole a pair of netgear gigabit switches from work that were sitting spare put the Archer C6s into AP mode only and now enjoying a solid 940/950mb/sec on wired connections and circa 450 anywhere in the house on wifi.
so current issues fixed, Now back to the issue at hand of making it faster :) and yes i'm well aware that 950 meg download and maxxing the upload at 50meg is probably more than anyone ever needs but this isan overclocking forum, we're supposed to chase the very last dregs of performance :)
