yeah but about 2.5 times the price!!!

1080p sets are around £1100, for a 42" (Sharp) Granted a 730p 42" is couple of hundred quid cheaper, but it wasen't like that when I bought mine. £100 more.

I severly doubt that anyone could tell the difference between 1080i and 1080p if two screens were set up side by side - technology moves on but just buy what you can afford at the time.

I can. And the difference between 730p and 1080p material is obvious (got a few sample videos) 1080p movie on a 1080p is staggering.

Just thought i'd add that the human eye has a limited contrast ratio as well without refocusing.

On a dark scene your eyes will focus on the bright bits which makes the surrounding blacks appear darker than usual.

Hence when comparing absolute contrast ratio between plasmas and LCDs, PLasmas win easily; but in practice i've noticed that unless you have them side by side its not that bad at all but plasma certainly have the edge as each pixel can turn on/off individually. In practice though, the glow of the bright pixels around the black ones make the black ones a bit greyer as well.

But you're talking about LCD versus Plasma, not 730p versus 1080p.
Plasma does have it's advantages, but it has disadvantages too. Screenburn for one.

no such thing as 730p mate

(well i suppose you could, but nobody would bother)

the standard is 720p, or 720 lines.

I see someone is bashing LCD (Plasma owner) typical really. Just because Plasma is behind. Plasma's aren't suitable for PC use, see the other thread with screenburn.

I own a Plasma and an LCD actually. Plasma is behind what tho m8 ?

PC use i agree dont use a plasma, but no one who is serous about having the best HC screen will be using a pc on a screen as a monitor, maybe to play movies and music but screenburn isnt an issue for that.

For HC with a flatscreen plasma is better, i dont think any serious person will disagree with this. However its vastly more expensive and LCDs are obv far more mass produced so the prices keep falling. People buy LCDs as they are cheaper end of. Nobody would walk into a shop and compare the best 1080p plasma and lcd for watching tv + movies and walk out with an LCD if pricing was the same.

LCDs are getting better but will never better plasma due to the need for a backlight, but come SED or whatever tech supercedes plasma and lcd (for performance) and my plasma will be gone quicker than an lcd can smear a football ;)

I paid a lot for my Plasma but it has been worth it, i could get the best 1080p LCD for under half the cost of my screen and would in a heartbeat if it could match my plasma but they just cant. Bare in mind i dont think any of the 'TV' plasmas come near a commercial panel plasma so it makes it harder for many to see how good the best plasmas are as you cant walk into a normal tv shop to compare them.

Plasma's aren't suitable for PC use, see the other thread with screenburn.

used vga cable to connect my plasma to laptop. Played bf2142, Company of Heroes and Baldurs gate 2 (looks great) and Rainbow 6 vegas. All of them looked excellent and played fine (1024x768 res). Remembering that your sitting at a distance of at least 6 or 7ft. Image is very sharp no ghosting or smearing noticed at all.

Screenburn?? Maybe with older plasmas but nowadays its not an issue providing you are at least a little careful (dont leave static images on for more than 2 hours imo). Screenburn is the old horror story rolled out every so often everytime there is a plasma vs lcd debate. My plasma has antiscreen burn technology (which you can configure how you like in the options).

Not had any screen retention at all. Albeit ive only owned the screen for 2 weeks.
