Alright guys - budget under £1k this is for a buddy that will be producing a feature film in 4k.

  • GFX wise must support 4k out but will not be used for gaming.
  • lots of rendering will be done so good CPU & lots or RAM.
  • SSD 512GB
  • Rock solid PSU required with case suporting atleast 4x 3.5 bays (future expansion options)

video storage will be to a 50TB NAS via 10GBe this can be left out of the spec - that's for another forum :)

The cost breakdown looks a bit odd to me. A 50TB NAS is going to cost well over a grand so budget can't be all that limited. I believe serious video work is done with a small cluster computers, but failing that I'd have thought the 8 core intel chips would be the easy choice.

I've spent the night researching and it does look like x99+5820k combo is what I'm going to have to plump for.

Some of the high end mobo's allow for upto 6 HD's in RAID10 so I may not need the NAS after all.

You'll want one of those 5K monitors so you can see the film full size and still have the tools available. That means you'll need a GPU with two DP 1.2 ports.

I would strongly recommend a dedicated RAID controller.

Gimpy - any recommendations on a dedicated RAID card? I don't have clue there seems to be quite a difference in price.
