Circa 6-7k. Ideally not a V8 monster.

to replace a 2002 Nissan Xtrail with epic mileage. To be used as a daily drive / transport of stuff / some rough terrain from time to time and any potential crap weather.

Doesn't need to be fast or fun. The 335 provides that.

And please don't go all hating on the concept of a 4x4, I know some of you will :p Looking for some valid suggestions of other motors to look at to replace the Nissan.

Thanks in advance mighty motoring section of ocuk!

How about a 2002 Nissan X-Trail?

I can't imagine £6k is going to provide anything fundamentally better 4x4 wise.

That's like double what my Xtrail is worth I'd imagine (forgot to mention that mine is a 2.0 petrol model)

But a valid point Mr Fox!

green oval suggestion from me, but I'm biased.
6-7k would get you a very tidy td5 discovery 2 (most likely with all the electrical niggles ironed out), maybe even a mark 3 (whatever engine they have now - tdv6?). Perhaps a smaller freelander, but I don't know much about them.

Depends on what you like I guess.

Do you want full time 4 wheel drive, or just the option of having it when needed? All discoverys are full time 4wd, with either a locking centre differential with high and low ratio transfer box, or have hi/lo transfer box and clever abs traction control - the newer ones are all elastic trickery traction control.

My mums mitsubishi shogun has 2/4wd, hi/lo ratio, locking centre and rear differential. Generally it works pretty well, switching from 2-4wd at anything up to about 50mph  Its 2.5 turbo diesel ain't too thirsty, given the weight of the vehicle.

My own personal preference is for knobs and levers 4wd/hi/lo gearbox control, the less electrical gadgets to fail the better imo, but you pay with a little refinement at that.
Still, driving about in the snow and ice was great fun, nice and steady :D

A Discovery 2 is no newer really than a 2002 X-Trail. Hence my point - I dont think this budget is big enough to properly upgrade a 2002 X-Trail.

Can those of you making recommendations outline why you think these recommendations are a worthy replacement for his X-Trail? It's no good just posting the names of random 4x4's - he's after opinion.

exactly what we use ours for, plus towing.

But it doesnt seem to be that much of an improvement over his X-Trail? Infact in many ways its less good as loads of space is wasted in an external loadbay.

hugely subjective but for me that's the beauty of it( edit: it's also about 60cm longer than the x-trail so there's probably more load space). You're not throwing a pile of crap into the inside of your car. It's a working vehicle that drives well (for a 4X4), has good comfort and reasonable economy.

That benefit is also a disadvantage however, if you want to get anything out of the load bay you have to get out, open the back and crawl in if it's at the bulkhead.

We've had discoverys, cherokees, shoguns and pajero's. The Navara, for us, is better than any of them.

Can I ask why you are looking to replace the X-trail? Is it just the epic mileage or something you don't like about it that might inform when thinking about an alternative?
