Hi,

I'm off to Canada soon, and I need a backpack - its to be used in the first instance for my hand luggage, (as my current one isn't suitable) then as a larger bag for overnighters, day trips etc. Requirements:

  • £50/60 budget
  • Must fit 17" laptop in comfortably
  • Must fit within most airline hand luggage dimensions
  • May be used for camping trips etc, so needs to be sturdy
  • Comfortable to wear

I understand that the budget may be a little tight, so can stretch a bit for a decent one :)

Thanks!

5.11 Rush 12 Backpack US Tactical MOLLE Pack 21L Black £72.00

Slightly over budget, and it all depends if the military look deters you or not.
Enough room for your 17inch laptop and is sure to last due to the materials used. Nice big chunky zips that don't get suck or jammed either.

(can't link to it for obvious reasons.)

I have just got a GORUCK GR1 :) which is absolutely fantastic.

I can not recommend it (the company and their products) enough; comfortably fits my 15 inch Retina MacBook Pro (will fit up to 17" in own securer compartment); huge capacity & incredibly comfortable.

Annnnnd, I have just reread the first post and saw the budget , unfortunately it's quite a bit over budget :(.

While Canada probably won't be a problem be aware that some parts of the world (Barbados, some parts of; Africa, Asia and South America) are a bit strict about military clothing and equipment or stuff that looks like it is so if your off on your travels should check that first.

Very good point,

I've traveled to Cambodia and Thailand with that exact rugsack, only got stop searched once however after a quick look through my bag I was free to walk on.

But I could imagine it being an issue in certain countries, depending on current affairs.

Osprey Farpoint 40

I use this for 5 day trips to Europe, takes my laptop, camera, enough clothes and spare shoes. Great pack

Passing through the Mexico/US Border (going back into the US)
I got stopped in a friendly way as we were travelling through on foot with two big military kinda looking bags. Truth is we'd just been to watch the desert racing in Baja so turned up looking pretty dirty/scruffy!

North Face bags have been good for me so far!

Indeed it happens, have a north face bag as a general day bag when I don't have to carry much and that has also served me well for just over 4 years now.

Use my Berghaus every day, waterproof, strong and pretty comfortable when used for cycling and general purpose.

For longevity I've had my Jansport backpack for 14 years+ and all zips and clips work perfectly.
