Spec me a basic server

Just installed my new RAM (Corsaire Vengence 2x4GB) into my HP ML110 G7 server and upon powering up a loud bleeping noise started with a Red flashing light coming on and off. According to the legends, this light refers to system health and if blinking red it means system critical.

wtf??

Check the ram is in the slot(s) properly and the notch is properly aligned, RAM is 'keyed' for the slot.

Failing that put your old ram back in and see if it works?

I'm sure I posted that I bought Kingston RAM and I KNOW that works fine.

Does it need ECC memory?

Looks like im going to have to get this changed for EEC RAM. What was the model of the stuff you used.

Im so annoyed. Its going to be weeks before i get this up and running now :(

Hi sorry for the delay :D My OCZ Boot SSD died again earlier. Thats the 4th time an OCZ drive has died on me! this time in less than 2 months. I'm thinking there C*r*a*p :(

I'll be wording the RMA very strongly!

Anyway the part number for the Kingston RAM is KTH-PL313E/4G Do a search. Unfortunatly a competitor sells the stuff so I cant link directly

Have you a SSD in your g7?

EEC RAM seems quite hard to get and dearer too than non EEC!!

I can see it for £28.63 for a stick........

Anyway no I dont use the SSD in the Server, I use it in my main games PC and Its a G6 I have.

Got the correct RAM today however i selected the 8gb stick opposed to 2 by 4gb sticks.

After booting up the server successfully this time, upon going into my computer properties its showing 10gb registered but still only using the original 2gb stick.

Can i ultilise 10gb or would i be best just to remove the 2gb and put in the 8gb??

Exchange is a resource hog, I'm not sure I'd want less than 8GB.

Then again I've only used it in a production environment with a few hundred users, maybe it's ok when it's not doing anything.

When trialing SBS 2011 (which includes Exchange) it ran like a dog with no legs on 8GB. Upping to 12GB got it running at a slow level even though this was in a home environment with nothing configured. If it was going to be used for anything more than the bare minimum I would go for at least 16GB for SBS 2011 although you may be able to get away with less for Exchange alone.
