Webbers are best for Roasts, But for most other things just stick to a regular BBQ.

Get an Expansive BBQ and then get a webber later in life for roasts if you wish to try something different

Don't think i'd have the patience for a roast at the moment, too lazy. :p

Think i'll go have a look at a few garden centres tonight if I get chance and see if anything catches my eye.

if you can find one hope it looks like this

Homebase usually have a lot of charcoal or gas bbq's, £500 will get you top of the range.

With your budget you should consider decking, tables, chairs, patio heater etc. :)

Homebase are 20% off all patio heaters, garden furniture and BBQ's until the 15th of this month.

Hi

I was of the opinion before that Gas was no good and it had to be a charcoal. But I have invested in this one

http://www.flamingbarbecues.co.uk/6-Burner/Outback-Elite-Platinum-6-Burner-Hooded

and it is a cracking BBQ. I also have a smoke box, to which you add soaked flavoured wooden chips which adds flavour to the food. Also invest in a rotisserie to cook whole chickens Etc by indirect cooking techniques.

regarding the cleaning a gas BBQ is equally as bad as a charcoal to clean in my opinion. Email me if you have any other questions.

Might have to swing past homebase again, had a very brief look over the weekend but we were mainly patio furniture/paint sample hunting at the time.

Got a table, chairs, parasol sorted yesterday :)

Don't need patience, just a bit of pre-planning - I find it easier than doing burgers and much nicer! :)

If you're going to do a roast then you need to give it lots of time to marinade, preferably overnight or even a couple of days - then there's the key to cooking it...a 2-zone bbq! Basically I use a combination of the Tesco instant-lighting briquettes (these are excellent) and normal lumpwood charcoal, basically build a bed of normal charcoal and put a bag on top for half the BBQ, and just a bag for the other half. Light and wait for the flames to die down - you should now have 2 noticeably different temperature zones on the BBQ.

Pop the joint of meat onto the hot zone for a couple of minutes, coupled with the marinade this will sear the outside and seal in all the juices, then transfer it to the medium zone and shut the lid then leave for 10-15 minutes. Flip over and sear the other side then transfer back to the medium zone for another 10-15 minutes until done to how you like it. Awesome :)

Pansies.

cook it over a log camp fire, like real men.

edit, typo D:

I wish I could buy wood, after all, nothing better than standing around the BBQ with a beer, mates, and flames burning.
Try and find some dry wood to buy in the UK though!

GOt bags and bags of wood here, the luck of having a log fire in the living room <3.

Tis also good for keeping the bbq alive into the night too. Good times.

Say what you like charcoal always tastes better than gas. If you wanted to use gas you might as well use a hob.

And another one for brick barbecue, though tbh anythhing willl do, I paid 40 quid for a barbecue from B&Q 4-5 years ago, after some pretty rigorous use my parents still have it and it's in good condition.
A wheelbarrow and some chicken wire would do it for gods sake.

Denz, thanks. Sounds promising. Where did you get your smoke box if you don't mind me asking?

As i am an Outback owner i joined the Outback owners club. Google it. Join for free IIRC.

You can then buy spares for the BBQ, accessories Etc direct from them. Cheaper generally than garden centres. Also has a forum of questions and answers, and a good BBQ recipe section.

So many people claiming cooking with gas is like cooking with the Hob or oven.

Clueless. Men just seem to want to play with fire and think without it they aint barbequing.

From one of my many BBQ books....

"Contary to popular belief, charcoal in itself imparts no flavour- it is the smoke from the cooking juices and any aromatics added to the coals which actually flavour the food, so you do in fact get the same outdoor flavour when cooking with gas."

Funnily enough I have lots of books by experts that say the same thing.

Yes I do and you can use a gas BBQ to cook like an oven, but when BBQing the results are the same.

If I cooked a sausage or burger on a Charcoal BBQ and one on a gas you wouldnt be able to tell the difference other than the gas one will better more evenly cooked. Anyone that tells you different is clinging to some bull that you need charcoal and fire to have a BBQ.

I'd just go by what this man says:

http://www.barbecuebible.com/featured/technique/the_grate_debat.php

The dedication of the man to BBQ food is amazing - I have the BBQ USA book and it is fantastic :)

I think this bit sums it up best:

Charcoal gives you the primal thrill of lighting and playing with fire.

Gas grills deprive you of the primal thrill of lighting and playing with fire.

LOL, that's what I said when I asked her how much we were allowed to spend.

I suppose getting a charcoal BBQ would let me cross over fuels with a fire pit/chimnea if we get one.

good grief man.. Just buy any one and see how you get on.. Just choose if you want charcoal or gas!! .. And don't give her the the cash to get one..or she'll be down Faiths buying shoes quicker than you can say "burnt sausage"!
