The past few months I have been trying to experiment with my beer and only really have the local supermarkets to buy from,

I started off drinking the usual carp like carling and carlsberg, Then I worked my way up to becks, after that I pretty much settled on tyskie and drank king cobra every so often,

The other day my friend recommended Goliath by Wychwood breweries, I really enjoyed it and picked up a bottle of Wychwood's Hobgoblin the day after which I also really enjoyed, I also tried Deuchars IPA from the Caledonian brewery and this is another great beer,

I am not drinking to get drunk, maybe 1-2 bottles per night but really want to expand on the few beers I have tried, As said above I only really have a few supermarkets and a bargain booze around here but I will try and follow up any recommendations

So with that in mind can any of you recommend something amazing for me :)

Thanks

Been drinking Leffe over in Holland the past week, and I think its quite a nice beer. Should be available here... I hope.

If you do actually have 1-2 a night then you are on the verge of giving yourself problems in the future.

Not trying to be pedantic.

When I read the title I was going to suggest Hobgoblin, but you beat me to it! I was suprised at how nice it is as I only got some because of the name. Goliath from Wychwood is also nice.

Leffe is now distributed by Interbrew, so there should be no problem getting hold of it.

It's possibly the best beer you can get ubiquitously.

Grimbergen (sp?) which is similar to Leffe but darker, is a damn nice beer.

Try looking in the 'world beers' section at Tesco, and grab a selection of bottles. But don't go for anything that looks like it has a 'light' taste, it'll be nasty.

depends how big they are surely?

Yeah sorry.

Basically al i know is 3-4 units 3 times a week is just about acceptable according to the NHS. So lets say thats a limit of 12 a week.

if you have 2 a night then thats exceeding your units a week. I also assume prolonged constant 2 units a night is worse than giving your body a chance to completley clean itself out before your next consumption.

Men should drink no more than 21 units of alcohol per week (and no more than four units in any one day).
so the limit is 21 surely? (im not trying to be argumenetive its just what it says :p)

You will get many suggestions.

I, however will not suggest anything specific.

Visit your local supermarket (Morrisons have the best range of ales by far) and have a look. Simply buy a few bottles, one of anything you fancy the look of. Don't go for the really strong ones, the strength often kills the flavour and you end up with a sweet syrupy beer.

Take them home. Do NOT put them in the fridge! If you can, keep them just below room temperature. I keep my bottles of ale on the floor by the back door where they stay just a tad below room temperature.

Then it may sound obvious, but drink them. You'll soon work out what you like and what you're not too keen on. Make notes if you have to so you can remember what you've had and what you thought of them.

Morrisons are great, they have a large range of ales and the prices are good. They also change their stock regularly so you'll find lots of new beers there.

Don't expect the beers that have become 'fashionable' over the last few years such as Old Peculiar and Pedigree to be the best. They're not the best by a long shot.

I love going ale shopping, there are so many different flavours out there.

Enjoy your beer.

It wasn't meant to be every night, I only get 2-3 nights a week at home with my girlfriend, on these nights I like to have a beer or 2

ahh wow ok...21 is quite a lot! haha. All i rmebeer is seeing a poster :p. i think any prolonged alcohol consumptio ncan't be too good. But i take onboard from the post above the OP is doing nothing wrong :)

5 of my favourites have already been recomended. Hobgoblin, Hoegaarden, Leffe and Goliath and Old Peculiar.
Black Sheep Ale is nice, Old Tom is very nice (and strong) - and for the white beers - Kronenberg Blanc is quite tasty too.

I tend to go into a supermarket and just grab a handful of bottles that look nice, bought about 6 a week for a month or two and found what ones I like, and went from there.

I wish this Newcastle Brown from a can didn't taste so awful right now though. I could murder any of the above instead. But it is all I have in the house at the moment, have had it out of a can before and its not been this foul, even but Hobgoblin in cans when I want to save some money and carry less weight :p

Clotworthy Dobbin, a fantastic ale. I don't know if you'll be able to find it though, as far as I know it's brewed somewhere in the Mourne mountains.

For the ones available in supermarkets try Fuller's 1845, Fuller's ESB, Old Empire (chill this one), Young's Special London Ale, Brakspear Triple, anything by Darkstar and the Chimays, these are the best that are widely available imo.

But there are far too many to remember just go to Morrisons and buy one of everything they always have a four for £5 offer on. Their own brand ale is brewed by the Freeminer brewery and it's pretty good.

Get yourself down to Morrisons. Seriously, there are more reasons to shop there when there's ale involved :p

Just work your way along the shelves and work out which ones you like for yourself :)
