If you want LOL funny then check out Tom Sharpe, his 'Porterhouse Blue' is the most famous of his but he statred with 'Wilt'. I read his entire back catalogue one after the other years ago and remember just bursting out with laughter on the bus and train.

Agree, I'm fascinated with Roman life and warfare. On book 6 of the Roman Legion series by Simon Scarrow - I prefer them to the Emporer series but you do have to be a little into ancient history.
If you want a small step up from Harry Potter then I could really recommend the His Dark Materials Trilogy by Phillip Pullman - I liked these much more than HP. If you are put off by the film Northern Lights then please don't be, the books are much deeper and the film was a great disappointment having read the books previously.
