Hi
Looking at getting a 24/26" tv for one of my boys for b.day (10) for his bed room.
It's only a small room and will be under his stompa bed on the desk.
I've seen logik ones with built in dvd & USB - don't know if they are any good or not, get a real mixed bag looking at reviews!
I'm also thinking of getting a bluray surround sound setup - again I've seen these for about £55 on t'bay.
With the surround sound I don't need built in dvd, just seems most have them!

I appreciate this is on a budget and I'm not looking for state of the art performance, it's for a 10 year old he isn't going to be scrutineer sound and vision quality ;)

Budget for both is £200

Thanks

Logik are rubbish from what I remember. I think they sell them is Asda? Well worth avoiding. Have a look at the LG CS460 if it's still about. Has freeview built in, 32", comes in at £199 iirc. It does have a USB port though I forget if it can do video. My much larger better spec LG can only do pictures and music from USB, though there is a hack which I really should get round to...

you can get a 50" Panasonic TX-P50XB for less than £400, forget about the surround sound and go for the HUGE tv

PANASONIC Viera TX-P50X50B HD Ready 50" Plasma TV
for less than £400 at a well known high street store, similar to the one which recently went bust.

i'm assuming your budget is £200 each and not £200 for both as that would be downright ridiculous

He said it's for a small room so that might not be an option. Our 50" in the living room is fine but i have one in the PC room too which is a much smaller room, between it, the TV unit and the speakers at either side it takes up most of the room lol.

Could always wall mount it i suppose.

No £200 for both -hence the use of the word 'budget' I've seen plenty of telys for £120 ish and the bluray surround is £70 (not £50 like I said in OP)...... a 50" in his small room under his bed would be ridiculous :p

As said this is a budget set up for a 10 year old

brand new tv's at that price point are going to be terrible in every way, especially in terms of reliability, due to the extremely cheap electronics being used.

and £400 is budget tbh, never mind £200 for a tv and surround.

therefore the only tv's i can recommend are from a certain store which gives 5 year warranties with every tv sold (even the cheap ones)

Philips 19PFL3507H/12 LED HD 720p TV, 19 Inch with Freeview and YouTube Video App

is £150

and

Panasonic Viera TX-L19X5B HD 720p LED TV, 19 Inch with Freeview HD

is £160

these are the only 2 options in your budget that are made by a known brand, they do have cheaper no name options with a 5 year warranty also, but i personally wouldn't risk it even with the warranty.

why the need for surround sound? especially since it is a bedroom setup for a 10 year old

The surround was something he said he'd like, and tbh I figured a budget telly wouldn't sound too hot, I thought bluray as it'd play dvd too - i'd say 99% of our stuff is dvd. but at least if he starts getting bluray he'd have something to play it on.(I quite like the idea of USB too)

I may forget the surround sound and just get a better telly. The sound could be added later if really wanted.

I asked about unbranded / budget because I didn't know if say a yangpong ono26hd had the same screen as say a branded make.

I put a 22" monitor on his desk, and thats a pretty good size for location 26 would be better, but no real need for bigger - even if a 32 would probably work out as cost effective/more choice.

We've got a 26" technika in the kids room and it is more than adequate for them! Get a surround sound cheap when funds allow or off eBay. The tv was roughly ~£160

I've just bought a 26" tosh built in dvd and usb - so should be a decent tv, I'll save the surround for now maybe get him some dvd's :)
