My dad is getting increasingly frustrated with his age-old desktop PC being slow and so I've been tasked with finding/building a PC for him.

I'm thinking a budget of somewhere between £300-£400 and he does have certain components that I can re-use in the new system - monitor, keyboard and mouse, SSD and HDD.

So basically I'm after a motherboard, CPU with cooler, RAM, PSU and case that will provide him with a decent desktop experience.

In terms of graphics card I'm assuming any on board graphics would be sufficient - he doesn't do any gaming or graphically intensive tasks - at the moment he's got an old ATI card in his system (I'd imagine any onboard graphics would be equal to it these days?)

Thanks for any suggestions!

The graphics card is an old HD5450 - predominantly bought for the HDMI connectivity if memory serves - I've just had a quick look at the comparison between this and the Vega 8 GPU capabilities here - only around 1000% better! :D

What does he use the system for? If it's just basic browsing and Office work, this should be ample...

Dependent if he likes a fairly quiet solution, could go for a case like this and an aftermarket CPU cooler to keep things near silent.

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £301.87 (includes shipping: £0.00)

Thanks for the specs - in terms of use he basically uses it for general browsing and recording his old music library - his PC is just so old now that everything seems to take an age!

What's his old system specs out of interest? And what SSD does he have?

The above spec would seem fine for a modern office desktop replacement then.

Might be worth having a look at some of the new A520 motherboards, would be ideal for your dads use case.

Just a note A520 don't support the 3000 APUs, unless he re-used the dGPU. But it seems pretty much confirmed to support 4000 APUs though when released, as the mobos have display outputs.

There doesn't seem to be any £ difference though between them and the B450 VDH board. Maybe £10 if got the cheapest A520 - I'd get a 3100 though with a dGPU if I had one.

The SSD is a 1TB SanDisk that I gave him so that should be sufficient and I assume I can re-use the Windows licence (it's got a sticker on the back of the machine rather than it being bound to the motherboard)

The rest of the machine is years old - I think it's an old quad core something or other!

On thinking about it I think I'd feel better about having 16GB RAM just so if anything it's overkill!

Even works on b550 :)

Is there a 3200G compatible motherboard that has HDMI and DP outputs? (I seem to remember that DP was the better option for refresh rates etc?)
