Spec Me A Camera

Jessops has good interest free payment deals if you're stretching the budget which might help in deciding what to go for. I assume others may do too, but not sure.

I went to Campkins today and had a look at the 40D and I have to say that it feels very nice and I like the weight of it. I saw the Pentax K-X in another shop but I didn't have a go with it, I will next time I'm there. Right now I'm thinking I'll go for the 30D as long as I can get it for a good price. Is it a bad idea to buy a used camera from ebay?

From what i've heard there isn't much difference between the 30D and the 20D so i'd look for both, i wouldn't have thought ebay would be much of a problem as if it is faulty then you can just file a paypal complaint.

Make sure you check out that pentax k-x! From what I've seen it's got better high iso and image quality than the 20d and 30d (bur check yourself).

it scored 73% in that review, which is one of the highest scoring cams on that site. And if you 2 lenses with it for £400 that's an absolute bargain.

Plus the k-x is one of the smallest DSLRs you can get.

I haven't been able to find the camera with both lenses for £400, prices I've seen are closer to £500. For around £300 though, I can get the camera without the 50-200mm lens. I'll go and have a go with it within the next few days. I'm already really excited about having a camera after so long, I'll probably end up buying this week :D

Im struggling to find that deal myslef.

£447 is the best ive found -

Which appears to be better value than buying them separately, saving about £60.

however you can get the K-x + 18-55mm for about £350 (jessops) then later get the DA 50-200mm for just over £100.

Im very nearly ordering it myself atm, and all the forums ive asked on all say its the best value DSLR you can buy, beating (on high iso AND image quality) more expensive cameras which cost up to £650.

You are making me very very jealous.

Dont forget the K-x takes 4 AA batteries, which a lot of users frown upon but in practice you get excellent battery performance and AA batteries are available all over the world.

K-x has got some great reviews. Always had a soft spot for Pentax after using my dad's ME Super for photography (and a Praktica MTL5) at 6th form many years ago.

... or anything with carl zeiss optics

So that'll be anything then? Given they make manual focus SLR lenses in a variety of mounts and fancy sony lenses. Only they don't, they just sell their name to other who do. Nothing fancy about them, certainly you're better with Nikon and Canon these days, Zeiss have been trading on a name for years. You're as good with 'Leica' optics on Panasonic compacts.

Went to town today and got the Pentax k-x for £350 and a case for £10 from Campkins. I went to Jessops and they would do it to me for £350 as well, but they spoke to me like I'm stupid and laughed when I asked them to throw in extras, so I gave my money to Campkins :)

Here's a picture of it in a really dirty mirror :D

Got a flash for it too?

I've had that flash for ages but I'm not really sure where I got it from, haven't used it until now, it's a lot better than the pop-up flash in my opinion so I think I'll use it a lot :)

Thanks for everyone's help in this thread, much appreciated :)
