Spec me a camera

I am thinking of getting a camera in the next few weeks as a gift for my wife.

She has always expressed an interest in photography and wants to dip her toe in things.

What sort of price do I need to look at for something entry level? What should I look at camera wise?

Yes, I think a step up from a compact will be the ticket. Something with a good few options but not enough to frighten a beginner.

Mrs Spud and I have been looking at an ideal budget in the region of £400

I have narrowed down to the following options.

Sony A55 - I can get one with an 18-55 lens for £500 online
Nikon D3100 - Around £380

I have also been looking at two compacts.

Samsung NX-200 - £500 or so with 18.55 lens
Sony NEX-5N - £500 or so with 18-55 lens

Is there anything else I should be looking at in that price range?

The cameras we have been looking at are over the top end of our ideal budget.

SLR Hut are dodgy. They sell grey imports and they also add 20% onto their listed prices for "duty"

Give them a wide berth.

Unfortunately if you use the shopping tab with Google most of the top results are scam sites or EBAY.

Digital camera sales seems to be a minefield of crooks.
