Hey folks,

The OH and I are heading out to Asia for a few weeks this spring and I need something to take some snaps with beyond than the average phone pics and the GoPro. Looking to spend no more really than about £300 or so which after a quick Google should bag be a half decent one.

The one that catches my eye is the Nikon D3100 as it seems to be a little more user friendly and seeing as this is our first step away from generic point and shoot type photography, simplicity is important...

Can I ask you kind people for some help? I promise I won't flood the forums with DoF shots :D

Argos link this seems to be a good price with an 18-55mm and 55-200mm lens @ £270 or the D3200 with just the 18-55mm lens @ £280

Hey buddy,

The Nikon D3200 was my first DSLR and I loved it, it took some great pictures. I payed £369.99 for it not long after it came out, so £279.99 seems like a bargain. I wouldn't even think about the D3100 for £10 less as the megapixel count alone is worth far more than £10.

Will you be taking video? as I know the canon's are a little better at video and the 1200d is in your price range.

Thanks for your input. In online reviews it seems to be fairly even with the Canon feeling like it's made much better though which kind of worries me... Do you have any thoughts on the build quality of the Nikon?

I won't realy be recording on it as I have the GoPro for that.

How about a Canon eos-m with kit lens from Argos (£199) and grab a 22mm prime from fleabay for £55 - £70. Nice and compact with great image quality and interchangeable system.

As above, look at the D3200 over the D3100 if it falls in your price range. I have a D3200 and it seems sturdy, not at all flimsy or anything. I don't think you'd be disappointed.

I'd definitely look at the D3200 over the D3100, you can get a D3200/18-55mm VR2 kit for your budget from the rainforest, or you could look second hand to save a few quid.

At that sort of price range though most cameras are generally pretty equal on features and it's more down to which one suits you better and you'd be happier using, I'd try and steer clear of the absolute budget models though.

Brilliant, there's a 3200 on the bay at the minute with the 18-55mm lens and a bag at £200 ending in a few hours... Will have a bid and see what happens.

How useful is the on screen guide I've read about? A bit gimmicky or is it likely to actually help us take decent photos?

Congrats. There's a million guides on the Internet to how to work aperture, ISO and shutter speed so you'll get plenty of practise in before your trip :)

Yeah looking forward to it... A friend was recommending the Cannon 1100/1200 but then shes biased. I hope I've made the right decision!
I paid £246.50, I'm not sure if the lens is VR1 or 2 though...

Are there any must have items I need? Probably a spare battery, how long should one last?
