I'm in two minds whether to finally get a DSLR for Crimbo or not.
My Pronea 35mm SLR is getting seriously long in the tooth now and I think it's time to go digital.

My main thoughts have been to go with the 40D.
The camera shop assistant at the weekend said he can't see the point in the 50D and the 5D I know is waaaaay outta my league.

have I made the right choice on model, if not what advantages does the one you suggest have..

40D has been out about a year and a bit and I think its the 1000D that has come out in the last month or so, is that correct.

Why, if the 1000D has only just been released, does it appear to be lower spec than the 40D... what's it trying to compete with?

Canon's entry models are anything XXXD/XXXXD on the DSLR range. XXD range are more for mid/advance users whilst the XD range is aimed higher up. So essentially, the newer 1000D is a big step down from the 40D, even though it is newer.

hitorically speaking the xxD are higher up than the xxxD range, but the 1000D is now the entry level. So the model range goes from bottom upwards in price -

1000D
450D
40D
50D
5D mk II

Then onto the 1D range which are the pro's choice (in canon)

1000D is not weather sealed compared to 40D and they both have 10.1 mp sensor.
450D has 12.2? mp sensor, uses SD cards.
50D is 15.5 mp
5D is full frame sensor.

Basically, the 1000D is the bottom of the range, it really replaces the 400D!

Would you decide on model simply on price / affordability or what?

I based it on a mixture of reviews, trying it if possible (even if it's down the local stores) and then compare between the models within your price range and then decide on it, main thing is... BUY online. you'll be able to net a lot more for your money.

Unless the local store is doing some kind of clearance discount.

Right, I bought a 400D as the budget for the 40D was too much. 450D was another option, but the frames per second were higher for the 400D and I felt that would be more useful to me than an extra 2 million pixels. The 40D is a whole different ball game in terms of build, menu system etc. and is weather sealed so the dust and rain will be kept out, and also has a few more bells and whistles.... I would have gone for a 40D if the budget allowed, that was my favourite, but am completely happy with the 400D

The guy in the shop said they are having a Canon day on Saturday, (whatever that is) shame I'll miss it as I'll be 35,000 ft up in the air by lunch time.

If the extra from the 50D isn't essential, the 40D is a great step to take. At least that's my opinion. I'm using a 20D and would love for the bigger view, higher FPS, ISO e.t.c. on the 40D.

The 50D is worse than the 40D according to some reviews.

Have you thought of other brands? Iwould compare the Canon 40D against the Nikon D300. The D300 is more expensive but much more of a camera.

Thread update time...

I'm now officially skint. :D

There's a tad of intimation there that the 1000d doesn't use SD - which it does, just to clear any confusion!:o

Nice choice nokinidea. First dslr?

Yup, first DSLR. I'm currently snowed under with bubble wrap, cables, dics and info leaflets at the mo...

Battery on charge :D:D:D:D

The 50D isn't worse than the 40D, it's just not worth the extra £400 it costs over the 50D, however, i went and bought the 50D anyway and i've had no problems with it, the screen at the back is much better than the 40D's.

Well lower or equal actual resolution, higher noise at equal ISOs, lower dynamic range, lower fps, lower color gamut. Not sure if there are any areas where the 50d actually outperforms the 40D, not that I looked very hard - must have been something you wanted I guess.

I've got the 40D with that lens :) Love it so far... haven't been into photography long but it's a lovely camera (even though I'm not brilliant at using it yet :P) haha.
