Cheap to buy (<£1000, more like £500), insure, fuel and tax. Perceived image and resale value not a consideration. Equipment and handling irrelevant, it will be doing 20mins each way a day on the motorway. I can make my own entertainment for that long. Must have at least 6 months t&t, will be replaced by a bike when it runs out in the summer. I'm thinking Ka, Clio or little Citroën diesel. What say you?

hardly a spec me, just do an autotrader search for anything within 10 miles of you under £1k.
will be loads of cars to choose from.

An old Ford Mondeo or a Rover 200 or 400 perhaps?

Ka's and the like tend to have artificially inflated prices because they're nice first cars, while bigger old cars are less marketable.

Done that already. I'm looking for more personal recommendations. Please be obvious elsewhere.

Ford.

Fiesta.
Mondeo.
Scorpio.

Gets you from A to B, cheap as chips, cheap parts, zero image, zero resale value, lots to choose from and you won't have to worry about parking dings. Just throw it away after you're done with it. It's not recyclable :p though Only downside is that they have no security so u might get the odd crack head nicking it to pay for their next fix, or a joy rider who can't be bothered to get the bus home :D

Alternatively, if you want something leftfield, go jap - Daihatsu Charade, Micra, Primera etc. Should be more reliable than a £500 Ford.

I loved my old 1.4 astras had two of them they were that good. They just don't die well one did but it got fixed. Never had so much fun in a car, even compared to my new 2.2 astra.

Cheap to insure and fuel pennies used to run about in the red for days.

Parts are cheap aswell.

Had a 1.25 zetec fiesta for a month, hated it really hated it.

Every Vauxhall I've had (2) have been stolen, one was even stolen from the side of the road after it broke down and I walked home. Consider Vauxhalls out of the picture :)

Forget the 200 - its engine will die on you or will already be on its way out. Head gaskets tend to fail on them with monotonous regularity. The bubble shaped ones still used the same engine. The square ones drive like a dog.

not really, yes they do go but I have owned one and seen 3 others througout a period of years and none have failed, not sure why they have such a rep for it tbh?? , a 214 would be your best bet, can be had for peanuts, sub 500 for one with tax and test and run pretty well and tend to have very few faults if looked after, hgf will be obvious, low coolant/oil would be an indicator, nice little revvy engines imho

Thats because there that good!

Had 4 Vuaxhalls now only been driving 3 years ;)

Nissan Primera 1.6

One of the most reliable cars ever, cheap as hell for a fairly good one. Perfect if you don't care about image or anything. There's no pulling the ladies in a Primera lol.

Check out autotrader for ones close to you, but i'm finding fairly decent ones for around £800 that meet your criteria.

lol

My personal choice would be a Mk1 Fiesta 950 but you just can't find them these days. I had a couple of those in my early driving years and while I hated them at the time, their simplicity would be ideal now. Thanks for the suggestions so far.

Other options could include:-

Golf Mk 3 GTI or similar
Citroen ZX 16v or Volcane
BMW 5 series (E34)

The Citroen ZX could be a lot of car for the money if you can find one in good condition.
