Spec me a cheap 500gb SSD for a media player?

LOL , i was almost tempted to post a captain obvious gif. :D

You hear of people complaining about M2 drives getting hot and throttling or normal SSD's having appalling small bit reads ( media players have very little cache ) so i wondered if there was a preference between the two when running on a external USB socket?

ah ok...a bit more detailed answer :p
essentially when running over usb, your sequential read/writes are limited by usb.
nvme m.2 would be pointless because of it.
slow random read/writes are (mostly) ancient history now, as all newer ssds have decent enough controllers not to be worried about this.
hence my throwaway comment about getting the cheapest one lol :p

i'd get one of the 3 below.
teamgroup has the cheapest cost-per-GB
intel/gigabyte have the largest capacity
intel is the quickest of the lot...of course gains here are marginal, and intel also has the longest warranty of the lot
if gigabyte and intel warranties are similar to their mobo and cpu counterparts respectively, then both should be easy to deal with, should the ssd cause any problems.

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £196.63 (includes shipping: £8.70)

there will be. because you'll also have the sata-to-usb controller added into the mix, and that will also affect throughput speeds.
as to the specific nuances or recommendations, i can't really give you an informed opinion, unfortunately
