I'm not sure how much I will be spending, but I'd like to go as cheap as possible to get a decent one...

I will spend no more than 2k...

I would like 4 seats, space for climbing equipment, reasonable engine - economical, possibly diesel...

My sides, they're hurting. In all fairness, this would probably be the best bang for my buck but I live in Essex and there is no way I am buying a Mondeo.

With respect, you have £2k to spend on a cheap car. Nothing you will buy with have any sort of image or cred.

It must be hard to advise the little people from your huge 530 eh?

I don't want negative image. I just want a 'bland' car - not a chav car. Not a car the Arctic Monkeys mentioned in one of their songs

Well I'm outta this thread, I make car recommendations to people based on rational thought. Thats quite frankly the most pathetic reason I have ever had the misfortune to read regarding discounting a choice of car.

Go and buy a Vectra, they are absolute rubbish but the Artic Monkeys never sang about it so its all good

Was gonna say Primera but I saw a chav in one the other day so thats out as well. All cars of this type for this sort of money are often bought by chavs - mostly becuase they are affordable cars. You'll see just as many huge exhuast fitted Vectras, 406's and Primeras as you will Mondeos.

How about a Xantia HDI? You could easily pick up a decent one with that kind of money; it's not got quite the same image as the Mondeo and has a much nicer Diesel engine.

If you don’t like the looks of the Xantia there is always the 406, pretty much the same car just more expensive.

You'll be back!

It's a chav car, and I live in Essex. Give me some credit.

No medical threads.

Not much probably about it, its pretty much nailed on to be.

[edit]How long has a Mondeo been a chav car?

So, a no to mondeos, lets look at some of the other gems Autotrader suggests at £2000...

2000 Escort 1.8 Diesel - Niiiiiice

2003 Rover 25 1.4 - Niiiiiice

2001 Daihatsu YRV 1.3 - Niiiiiice

... I could go on, but I expect you can see the point.

Actually, I'm half thinking of getting a cheap Escort Tubro Diesel. Not much better than a mondeo, cheap as chips though!

Then you are half way to becoming a poor chav...

An escort is FAR more of a 'chav' car and as a car itself is horrible compared to a mondeo.

You're right it isn't much better, it's much, much worse

Use your brain for one minute here will you please, you can't have uber image and power for £2k, you just can't ...well not if you want it to actually work anyway. There is nothing wrong with mondeos, they aren't the worlds most interesting cars or the worlds best, but they are pretty handy at what they do and they don't have an image problem really, infact their only real claim to fame is that no one really notices them ...which can't be as bad as getting noticed for your 38 million watt stereo and 97" chrome spinners on a 200 quid Corsa with different coloured body panels, surely.

Allow me to suggest a late '90s Honda Accord too, they are arguably even more boring than the Mondeo, but they are decent cars, cheap and reliable and you can get them with some very decent equipment levels on too if you look around.

I would say that was totally uncalled for and that as usual fox was making a suggetion based on your initial requirements, why didn't you jump down gillys throat for suggesting the mondeo? For someone with a MOH title I expected more

The escort engine will be pap, if you want pap go with that. If you actually don't want suggestions then why post?
