As title. Our old Krups has seen better days (taking it camping probably hasn't helped) and I'd like a new one. The traditional filter type machines seem out of vogue now with the advent of the cartridge style devices that I don't like.

Budget up to £200. What should I be looking at?

I'd personally not spend that much on a filter machine - they're all much of a muchness and provided you dont buy a cheapy £20 job, will all do the same thing and last about the same amount of time.

If you *really* want a good filter machine for that sort of money and dont mind the industrial aesthetic, get one of these

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bravilor-Bonamat-NOVO-021-Novo-2/dp/B005D75RP8

It's the sort of thing that gets used in restaurants, offices etc and will last forever

Just buy a cafetiére. Barely more effort, easier to clean and makes just as good if not better coffee, plus nothing to go wrong and a lot less than £200 :D

isnt that just a peculator ?why would you spend £200 when they all do the exact same thing

they are one of the most basic appliances you can get you might as well just spend £50 or whatever

hassle to clean though compared to removing a mesh filter and washing it in the sink.

my cafetiére usually sits wish coffee in it for days because I hate cleaning it so much.

you always end up with coffee bits in your cup from them too

My advice, buy a Hario V60 for less than a tenner, then spend £190 on a grinder.

You get good coffee through a) good beans, b) good grinder c) the right technique and somewhere around z) the filter machine itself.

Seriously a Chemex is a lot nicer looking too. It is like the mechanical watches of the coffee world :p except it's not priced like watches and cost more than a digital one.

I have one of these:

http://www.debenhams.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/prod_10701_10001_325004904803_-1

  • Drips the correct temperature water through coffee grounds in a filter and deposits it in a jug.
  • Warming plate at the bottom to keep the coffee warm when it's sat in the jug.
  • Timer so you can set it 5-10 mins before your alarm goes off and wake up to the smell of fresh coffee.
  • Easy to clean - knock the dried grounds into the bin/compost heap, rinse under tap, sorted.

Not sure what else you'd want really? :p

(Other than perhaps some sort of rudimentary conveyor system to transport said coffee to your bedside)

I looked around a few months ago and went with the very manual approach of a Hario hand grinder and Aeropress.
