Spec me a cooker !

Bear in mind that if you live in a flat it will be counted as multiple occupancy dwelling. The cooker you buy will need to have a flame failure device if you go for gas. Most gas hobs should have one as standard these days and will have done since 9th march last year but always a good idea to check ;)

Im with dm pool you should buy german if you want decent. I have always used NEFF or AEG/Electolux and never had any bother. Avoid Candy and Indesit like the plague!!

I have heard a lot of people say bad things about them, but I picked up a Smeg gas hob/ electric oven for £50 off eBay (Was leaking to earth thru a loose wire so she thought it was totally buggered lol)

Anyway by far the best cooker I have ever used. They are about £600 new though!

yeah good point about that multi dwelling thing - FSD or something is it? it'll be in the specs for the cooker whichever you get. i'm also looking for a new cooker (gas), check for a supply and fit price with where you get it from - curry's and argos fit and take away your old cooker for about 100 notes on top of the price. not really looked further afield than that though.

if you find some bargains let me know :p

Go for a free standing 'induction' cooker if possible or an induction hob; they are as controllable as any gas cooker.
Downside: They are quite expensive and all your cookware has to be magnetic or it doesn't work.

He has gas available, why on earth would he want to invest in an expensive technology along with compatible pans to overcome the control problems with electrical hobs?

Out of interest, who would you is THE best of the mainstream brands (inc stoves etc)? :)

I had to sit through 1000s of Italian domestic appliance quality audit meetings where they had compiled figures from around the world and Bosch were ALWAYS at the top.
Miele were a close second but only because not as many are bought because of the price and AEG were third (that was bad English).
Indesit Company (taking in Creda, Hotpoint, Ariston, Belling, Cannon) were always around the 4th with companies like Zanussi & Candy below us.
Stoves were never on the list because they weren't big enough to compete against even though their quality is excellent.
I can quite confidently predict that now Indesit's products are made in Poland they will be way down the list.
About a month ago I heard that 95% of products end up on the floor in the Poland factory (on the floor means faulty, parts missing, quarantine).
Creda/Hotpoint used to accept a 5% 'on the floor' ratio but when the Italians came it rose to nearly 50% which became a nightmare.
I'd quarantine 1000 cookers for having a major problem (eg when turning on the single grill the double would come on and vice versa) and then suddenly they would all disappear to the public with the excuse "they will let us know when their kitchen burns down".
I once quarantined 3000 cookers where the grill had incremental settings wired wrong, so basically when you put it on the lowest setting the highest would be on instead which could cause a fire - they all went out.
The very worst were gas pipes under a hob that weren't passing our tests and were very dangerous.
The Italians let them all go through the door and one of my colleagues actually had tears in his eyes and made them sign a document that he didn't let them go.
In fact, we started to keep a book where we got the Italian boss to sign when he let dangerous cookers through the door.

dmpoole, your opinion on this one we had recently,

55 new flats all with same electric hob fitted into the worktop, but when using started burning the worktops, manufacturer said they passed British Standards so refused to replaced them, it cost us (the firm) £5k to replace them all
