Spec me a cordless drill

Forget NiCad, old tech now, Li-ion batteries are far superior.

Highly recommend first, got one to replace a elderly Bosch cordless.

Also look at these as well.

DeWalt DCD776C2 had a look at one last night in Screwfix, comes with 2 batteries, a well balanced drill, can't comment on Dewalt reliability, as I'm a Makita/Bosch user.

Bosch multipurpose drill bits superb bits, but I do miss not having a 5mm as well in the set.

Makita jobby, I bought one for £100 with two batteries (Only 1.3ah but you can charge one while using the other). It's great, wouldn't use it for heavy applications but for DIY use it's just the ticket. I use it for driving screws mainly but I have in the past drilled concrete and steel with it.

I'm idly looking at drills at the moment, as I currently have to borrow my dad's corded drill.

How does the Hitachi stack up?

Is a 2nd battery worthwhile - as a DIYer, it would rarley be used I guess - how do they fare when rarely used (couple of times a year I guess)? I can imagine it's a PITA if you have to stop mid job to charge the battery, but then, it'd be no good if the spare battery died due to lack of use!

jellybeard999: Never used Hitachi cordless drill, only Hitachi power tool I've ever own, was a evil 12" circular saw, kicked like a mule on start up, but it was reliable.

Anyone got an opinion on the Makita BHP458Z? The torque looks a lot higher than other drills and I've seen it at a similar price to the ones in Screwfix.

You can pick it up naked for around £75 or less, it has enhanced dust and drip-proof performance for use in outdoor applications.
It is a heavier duty drill, masonry: 16 mm & wood: 65 mm, also has a led work light, & a new design DC motor (FD31-30).

You can get on Amazon with battery & charger £139:99p, which is a pretty good deal.

The reason its higher torque is due to the slow geared 400rpm drive speed. But looks like it has a useful 2000rpm drill speed, which is about as high as 18v drills go. Most posted so far are only 1300rpm, which is rubbish imo.

Hitachi are not bad, probably equal to these Makita £100 drills.
