I don't need monster speed and very latest but something i7 that can run 8 threads at least and good balance between cost and performance. Good motherboard with options. I want to stick with i7 or above. Not totally averse to AMD but I've always been an Intel guy.

16G of RAM minimum with upgrade to 32 (so 2 sticks). I'll be honest with you, I went from 16G to 32G in current rig and noticed no difference at all......

Already have most disks but want new NVMe to boot from.

Have 1060 GFX already. I'm not a monster gamer so 1060 is plenty for me.

Rig will be used for my astronomy processing/Light room/Premiere/office/router emulation (GNS3) and some light gaming on classics like GTAV.

Budget, dunno, £500? Been away from PC building for a few years so finger not on the pulse.... so can afford some more £££ if really needed.

Thank you guys,

If you go with Intel you are going to spend all but £50 of your £500 just for a i7 8700k due to these disgraceful price rises. AMD is where the best bang for buck is right now. Ryzen is a excellent platform and AM4 is going to be around until 2020 meaning that any cpu launched up until then can be dropped in a existing motherboard. There are some very good bundles on here at the moment. I think Ryzen with the extra cores and threads would be perfect for your uses.

Ryzen 5 2600 6 cores/12threads, Gigabyte X370 motherboard, 16Gb 3000mhz DDR4, Wraith cooler and a free 240Gb SSD all for £418.97 (£30 less than just a 8700k by itself).

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £429.47 (includes shipping: £10.50)

Top of the range Ryzen 7 2700X 8 cores/16 threads, Asus Stix X370-F motherboard, 16Gb 3200mhz DDR4, Wraith cooler and a free 480Gb SSD all for £608.96.

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £619.46 (includes shipping: £10.50)

Seperate components of Ryzen 7 1700 8 cores/16 threads, wriath cooler, Asus ROG Striz B350-F motherboard and 16Gb 3000mhz DDR4 for £445.97. The 1700 is from the original launch last year but is only a bit behind the new 2700. I picked it to go with the 350 chipset motherboard in case the bios would need flashing to take a 2000 series cpu (it should all be done with the bundles above). There is a severe lack of 400 series motherboards on here as well.

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £456.47 (includes shipping: £10.50)

Not sure about the M2 drives but the Samsung 970 Evo series seem to be recommended quite a bit on here.
