Hi guys,

my cousin has an athlon 64 with 2gb ram and is looking to upgrade. He has been offered this second hand...

Wolfdale 8400 dual core cpu
Asus P5Q motherboard
8 gig ddr2 corsair dominator 1066mhz memory with cooler
Arctic extreme cooler
Also the stock cooler for the cpu will be in the bundle and of course motherboard and cpu box

For around £290 collected.

I have told him to stretch to around £350 and go for a nice new quad core setup.

Now then, please can you guys spec me something for around £350 tops!

I'll start you's all off...

Intel Core I5 750 Processor @ £110.63 (£129.99 Inc. VAT)

Need a mobo and ram with this, ideally for £300.

Thanks :)

Good spec from bigjimmyauk. That intel s775 package isnt worth £290.00, more like £230-240.00.

How about this:-

Intel X25-V Value 40GB 2.5" SATA-II Solid State Hard Drive (SSDSA2MP040G2R5)
Patriot Sector 5 Viper II 4GB (2x2GB) PC3-12800 1600MHz Dual Channel + 3D Mark Vantage (PVV34G1600LLKB)
Titan TTC-NK85TZ Fenrir CPU Cooler (Socket 754/939/940/AM2/LGA775/LGA1366)
AMD Phenom II X2 Dual Core 550 3.10GHz Black Edition (Socket AM3) - Retail
Asus M4A785TD-V Evo AMD 785G (Socket AM3) DDR3 Motherboard

Ok, so its £353, but you could have so much fun unlocking/clocking the 550, and the added SSD should give the system a nice boost?

Age old question but what will he be using it for?

Does he need crossfire / SLI supported MB?

2bg/4gb/8gb of memory etc

Crossfire/Sli not needed.

4GB DDR3 preferred, don't think you can squeeze in any more with that budget.

The i5 retail can be had for £130 so that is almost a definate, and although it may be overclocked it will just be kept at default volts so I think the retail heatsink/fan will be sufficient.

So it's mainly mobo and ram.

He intends to buy from wherever is cheapest really, but obviously please don't mention competitors.
