As the title states...

Does anyone have any knowledge on these devices and which one to buy or avoid?
The roads are very busy these days and the chances of having an accident are as high as ever. I would like to install a dash cam so as I might have the edge on any accident I may be unfortunate to end up in.

Scotty

I was looking about but ended up getting witness driving for my iPhone. Does everything that a dedicated cam does and was 69p obviously only any good if you have a smartphone but great bit of kit.

There are a few threads already in Motors about this. try a search :)
I tried searching but didn't get any return (thanks Burnsey), I finally got something after the Go-Pro advice from rexehuk (cheers). Also to Skyline - I prefer a dedicated unit to do the job although that is an interesting approach.

Are people really doing this these days?
Has everything got to be on camera so nobody can file a personal injury claim against you?

Got an iPhone?
Get one of these and leave it on your dash.

Recommended for practising juggling with kittens too.

:D

Unfortunately it's not really the personal injury claims its the lying scum that admit liability at the scene then blatantly lie about it afterwards magically producing a witness and royaly screwing over the victim of the accident. If 1 of these scumbags get what's coming to them because of a dashcam then they are worth the money!

The wife has a BlackVue DR380g HD in her 1Series and it has already caught in parking mode a car reversing into a neighbours car and driving off. Slight distortion due to the wide angle lens 120°. This is a screen capture when it was in my car.

I have a Akenori 1080P Pro in my car now as the wife wanted a BlackVue so I decided to try something different. It also has a Pentax lens that reduces the distortion. A screen cap again.

Both have GPS logging and the speed can be turned off if your paranoid about the police.

A competitor has a few variants of dash and mirror cams under £100. Haven't used any but the reviews seem generally positive. Need a 12v supply and sd card.

Think I'm going to look at getting one of these - waaay too many idiot drivers around here. I had to use my ABS for the first time in anger when a van just decided to turn across me at a junction - scared the living excrement out of me.

Regarding the comment about "is everyone doing this these days to protect against claims" - sadly, it's becoming more and more necessary. Since I like to think I'm open and honest, my chances of getting done over are pretty high!

I don't know if 'everyone' is doing this, however, the number of people I know that are getting 'knock for knock' claims is worrying. I don't know the full implications of this but I hazard a guess that everyone concerned ends up paying their full excess. It makes my blood boil when I hear of people that are essentially NOT at fault being roped into such a claim due to lack of evidence or conflicting accounts as to what actually happened.
I would like to at least have a chance to provide evidence that will go in my favor, rather than some insurance investigator who can't be arsed to do their job properly, simply 'rubber stamp' it as a 'knock for knock'.
I recently had a women who came into the news agents while I was paying at the till saying "I don't just want to drive off as I did just nudge your car, I don't want anyone saying I just drove off..." So we walk outside and I can clearly see the marks from her 4X4 rubbing down the car and cracking the lens-light... she immediately says "I didn't do that damage". Now this proves that a camera won't help you in all circumstances and indeed it didn't help in this one. The lack of 'proof' ended in a stalemate situation and as it was a company car I didn't really worry about it.
I just shudder to think the same happened to my car, however, I want to minimise the chance of it happening. Insurance investigators really don't put any effort into minor incidents where people arn't injured significantly, therefore its worth having anything that will help you prove your case.
We live in a world where many people think its simply a fact of life to lie and cheat the system for their own benefit, for the majority, that is the status quo - and its a sickness that needs to be combated.
