Spec Me A Decent Modem/Router

Hi guys,

My family's just moved into a new house, a four story Georgian jobby, so the Belkin G modem router they have just doesn't cut it any more.

They want the wireless to reach all four floors eventually, but for now they'll be happy with three. They'd like to spend no more than £80, so what does OcUK recommend?

I've had a look around and seen the Billion 7800n recommended, but that's too much. How does the 7300 fair? I'd like to get them sorted before I go back to University next week.

Suggestions welcomed.

Thanks!

Repost below from a previous thread...

I cannot recommend the asus RT-N56U enough.

Now I am not sure about lots and lots of connections to it but you can have QoS to take care of game traffic for example before other stuff i am sure it would be fine. I have been using it now with a couple of wired connections and a few phones connected to the wireless and a laptop I use for skype which works without any hastle. I am on virgin 20 meg and still use the old black cable modem with this router so I am not a victim of the superhub issues.

It isnt the cheapest router but with it being duel band it is a little future proof so again I cannot recommend this enough.

Given that you are in a 4 bedroomed house I would perhaps look at putting the router as close to the centre of the house as possible. This router as really nice range i have read since it targets devices rather than just being a net around stuff if you understand that.

Really would bite the bullet and get the 7800n billion, bought it a few months ago and have disconnected maybe once total.

Almost forgot about this thread, been a bit busy.

Thanks for the replies. I've asked about the Billion and it's just too expensive, around £40 too expensive, where as the ASUS is just about right. Had a quick look at the reviews and they all seem good, so thanks for the suggestion.

Edit: Seemed like a good buy, but it's only a router. They have TalkTalk so need a modem built in. Should have made it a clearer. Sorry.

I am sure there would be a way to get the Asus to work with the old belkin you have if you just wanted that as a modem instead of a router but would be unsure how to get it to work, other than that you could just buy a cheap modem and still go for the Asus.

Indeed, I had been considering that. I'll keep having a look and read around, but if the Asus is a good router for the money then I'd have no problem using the old belkin as just a router.
