Spec me a decent wifi router with built in VDSL

I just got the TP-LINK Archer VR900 a few days ago and I must say it is fantastic. It's fairly new having only been released July.

I got it to replace my Asus AC-68U and HG612 modem combo, I was sick of the ASUS just crashing out every few days. The HG612 and sync was perfectly fine otherwise.

A £120 router shouldn't do such a thing, so the ASUS went back for a refund. :D

If you get one, make sure you download and flash it to the latest firmware first, then go through the quick setup etc.

Sky on the Fibre Pro package.

One of the reasons I say to update the f/w first, is not only is it more stable and bug-free with it being a new router/modem...

But it also adds the option for SKY's MER auth when you run the setup, in the previous firmware it's not compatible with Sky MER otherwise. :)

I was hoping you wouldn't say that :(

I'm on Sky Fibre and just bought the ASUS RT-N66U and a BTOR modem, so now considering going for my other choice which was the VR900?

The ASUS is a lovely router. The features were nice and it was even better on the Asuswrt Merlin firmware! But they just weren't reliable in my experience.

I had the RT-AC56U first off, it kept crashing out (I noticed the router CPU was high temps 78c just general usage) so I ended up returning it and getting the RT-AC68U. This was very similar and crashed every few days, the internet would stop wired & wireless but the LEDs on the router indicated it was fine... So I tried factory resetting both routers when I had them. I even tried both the stock firmware and Merlin firmware, along with lowering the Wifi output power in case that was causing it amongst a few other things, it still crashed sometimes it would go a week but I just thought I'm not keeping it for £120!

So from experience mate, I would send it back... Sorry! :(

On the upside if you get the VR900, it's incredibly easy to setup, the new UI is very tidy modern and intuitive to use. Just don't forget to flash the f/w first to the latest before setting up. :)

Thanks, think I will return it :(

I'd be very interested in how the VR900 fairs over a longer period of time?

I'll let you know in this thread if I remember, if not feel free to drop me a trust whenever you want an update. ;)

It's only been 2 days so far! But it's still better and more responsive than the ASUS' were.

TD-W9980 - TP-Link

Cheaper @ £60 but does MER on Sky fibre pro with beta firmware. dual band, gigabit ports. No issues here used for about 3 months.

I bought the W9980 and it is going back after two weeks.

The wifi performance was poor with bad range and frequent disconnects of all the wifi devices. Google suggests this is a common problem with TP-LINK products.

I have ordered a D7000 and will see how that goes.

That's rubbish, or at least it is in terms of my Archer VR900 which is their newest model. Rock solid thing this! Can't fault it. Sync is brilliant, wifi performance great, no drop outs for anything.
