Hi all.

I've got an old shoddy computer desk which I've had since I was about twelve. It's served me well but I think it's time to grow up! :p Current desk area is as below:

What I need is a simple, one-level rectangular desk with either a wooden or glass top, for less than £100. It should be more than 130cm wide but certainly no more than 200cm wide, and I was hoping you people had some practical experience of some nice desks that you could relate to me. I've trawled through loads of desk threads but most people don't mention the model.

One's I'd like people's thoughts on (as well as ones I haven't mentioned below) are...

Argos Avebury Glass and Metal Desk (£90):

IKEA Jerker, which seems popular but I don't want the metal bits sticking up any higher than the desk (£80):

Argos City Beech 1.5m (£65)

Alternatively I can build my own with legs and tops from B&Q / IKEA (£75ish - assuming you get four legs in this pack??)

Thanks for any opinions :)

Excellent, that looks good also. I'd be just as happy without the cupboards but that looks fairly solid and with the added bonus of lots of storage. Let's add that one to the list (£90) :)

I'd go with that one. I've heard it's got the best overclocking capabilities and the drawers will be useful to hide crap.

Amp, 360 hidden in the cupboard and my modem/360 wireless thing are hidden in the draw.

Cheers Raikiri. Can you choose what side the drawer / cupboard goes on?

Edit - also I stumbled across your post here Raikiri - is that the Argos Avebury glass? Why did you change it?

Im using a similar one to "Argos City Beech 1.5m", or it could be it (Too messy to see :p) but so far it seems okay, keep in mind it is very big and so far, its really stable.

Although Raikiri's Ikea Jonas is telling me to dump mine and get one of them!

I've also got the Argos City Beech desk. I'm pretty happy with it and it was quick and easy to assemble. Here's a picture of it (sorry for the mess):

Combination of dust and being able to see the cables got on my nerves, those pictures don't really show but there were cables everywhere.

not sure were my mam got it from but i robbed it off er :)

tho i hope to ditch it soon and go for the "Cheap and cheerful option - IKEA Mikael 140cm (£35)"

I've just got the IKEA Mikael myself... excellent value for £35!

But... two issues (that might apply to lots of the other desks too)

1) it's a bit tall (ie the desk surface is quite high off the ground)

I've got a fancy office chair that doesn't quite rise up high enough. Well, it's ok if I sit up very straight, but I like to slump ;) This exacerbates the next problem:

2) the edge of the desk is a 90 degree angle - it's not rounded off very much.

These two factors equals my forearms leaning on to the front corner of the desktop - which is bad for RSI - my arms actually feel a little weird if I lean too long, like they're going cold. I'm probably creating pressure on a main artery or nerve...? So I'm going to buy something (1" diameter half-dowel?) to create a rollover edge to reduce the pressure on my forerms. Or a higher chair!

I have 2 of these in the dark finish, part of the Malm range iirc? Sturdy build but the surface does mark easy imo. :)

Heh yeah ive done the same, stuffed all the plug board in there too. Bit of DIY was required on back to get the boards in, well worth the effort though.
