I need to get a dinner jacket(and matching trousers) for my work Christmas party. I have a budget of 300 quid, and have seen possible purchases at TM Lewin and Moss Bros. Any opinions on either or recommend another? Ideally I want to walk into a shop and try out for size, rather than rely blindly on ordering from the Internet.

M&S do decent suits at that price point. Well worth a look and might not need to spend £300 either (you could if you wanted to though).

TM Lewin are pretty good. I wasn't a big fan of what M&S had to offer despite generally liking a lot of their other stuff. I ended up buying mine from Charles Tyrwhitt.

You should just try on a few and get the one that fits the best - the vendor that fits someone else well might not fit you so well

M&S will offer you better value than most - but if their standard sizes don't fit so well then you're still better off going elswhere

The fit of M&S suits are poor, the tailored range isn't bad but anything more fitted are designed for court appearances at the bottom of the range. I imagine for not much more than £300 you could get a proper tailored suit or something from suit supply?

you can't get a proper tailored suit for £300 and the fit of an off the rack suit depends on the person wearing it

Buy a good value suit or jacket such as M&S and then get it adjusted by a local tailor. Fit is more important than the brand and a tailor can make a cheaper jacket fit far better than a non adjusted expensive one.
