:D He does look very cute. Wouldn't they get a bit smelly though with all that hair?

You do realise that a protective dog isnt going to be a good one here? German shepards are VERY protective dog's and will poss see the baby as using its space with its owner and attack.

Jack Russell's or whatever they are is a stupid idea. You wont somthing smallish but solid. I myself am biased but a staff or sim dog like errr. Beagle sounds best.

Beagles however I belive will cost a lot in vet bills though with its ear's dragging and so forth.

As Gilly has said, do not get a Jack Russell!

Its the one dog that I just don't trust. I have spoke about them on here before and of all the dogs out there that I have dealt with its the only breed that has ever attacked me. Even though they aren't very tall and you would guess that an attack would consist of biting at your trousers you would be wrong, they can jump a good 5" upwards and can go for your face.

Not to mention if you ever let them off a lead in the country they will promtly find and disappear down the nearest rabbit hole :D

Although not the same dog, I had an alsatian and it was always happy for me to wonder through its part of the house, hell when my mum was washing up I used to sleep in his dog bed - think that confused him a little :p:D

I'm going to step away from this now. Its a very emotive subject because people not only have their favorite breeds but different dogs can be very different even within breed boundaries and one persons experiences will not necessarily equate to another's.

I highly encourage you to go to 'Discover Dogs' if you are considering getting a pure breed and then when you have narrowed it down speak to a breed club for more info and to find the details of a recognised reputable breeder.

Surprised no one has mentioned a Setter, English or Irish I would recommend, got an English myself. Very docile, regal in a way :p

Gordon Setter if you want something a bit bigger built.

I can link some pics/vid if you wanna see it in "action" lol ;)

Is it me, or does this thread seem like a competition with all the postee's rooting for their own dog?

Dunno about any of you, but I will feel like I've won if he goes for a Setter :D

wow - thanks for the responses, a lot of very welcome and informative stuff - appreciate it all :)

i will keep researching, attempt to get to crufts and although i am being swayed towards a Lab. - i know theres a lot of factors to consider

Nope. My dog is a boxer and although I love him and he's perfect for my scenario I didn't reccommend him as he's not for the OPs.

Not at all lol!

I've got a 5 month old Akita that weighs around 5 stone. There's a good chance he's going to almost if not double in size by the time he's finished growing, so I'd not recomend getting one with a small child around.;)

Each dog is an individual. It is unique within its own breed, and its own breed is unique.
Each owner is much the same: unique in all aspects.

I would say think about yourself then read what people say about their experiences with their pets. Look at some photos from breeder websites (Kennel Clubs specifically are excellent) because you might see one which you fall in love with.
Then once you've read up on said kennel club websites and breeders go to a breeder and talk to the person in charge. There you'll be able to see what 'perfect' examples of the breeds look like and how they interact with you.
Unless you are really unlucky or just cant control your dog will you have problems eg with your kids.

Good luck.

Just dont get a yappy little rat for the sake of your manliness and sanity. I dont recommend jack Russell or collie, nor pekinese or smaller members of the hound class.
