Having finally bought a house and therefore able to have such pets, we're looking to get two dogs. The first one we've settled on is a golden retriever, my mrs grew up with them and is very au fait with their care etc. I happen to uite like them too.

We want to get a second dog, however, mainly to keep this one company but we're unsure what to get. I quite fancy something small and mental - always had a soft spot for springer spaniels but know nothing about actual dog ownership... is this a good idea?

We will have a sizeable garden and i'm converting half of the wendy house into a double sized kennel for them both.

Also, where do I look for dog insurance? Google throws up the obvious, tesco etc. but are there other places I should be looking?

I remember the vet saying that PetPlan was probably the best for insurance, but we've been with More Than for almost ten years and they've been brilliant too, no problems with payouts.

As for what dog, i'm a bit biased but how about a collie? Full of energy and being one of the most intelligent breeds doesn't come without a few advantages ;)

Wheaten Terrier? Had mine for ~6mo now and the little blighter just slays me every time. :)

Alternatively, if you're not fussed about breeds I found that my old mutt was irreplaceable. Simply the best-tempered creature I've ever come across. (1yr since she died in May, was 16 when she died)

How much time do/will you have to walk/exercise a dog? No point in getting a very active dog who needs a lot of exercise if you won't always be able to talk it for a walk, and vice versa I guess

Cocker spaniel maybe??

A household with two large dogs is a pain and there may be problems with pecking order, a small dog would keep the fat off the first one.

Ah you are keeping them outside, oh then get a collie.
Personally I think GR's are a bit dense but collies are far too clever and they don't bark all the time like small dogs.

Please get a collie from a dog rescue, there are some great dogs there.

I live on a farm and have a springer, and he is a nutter with so much energy. He is an outdoor working dog so we can wear him out a bit. Even though you have a garden you would have to be prepared to take it on masive walks, without exercise they become very bored. They are not a breed to be content and chill out and relax all day.

My old labrador used to get on very well with my aunt's king charles spaniel, taking them on walks together was fine and they enjoyed chasing each other in the garden.

A spaniel might be a bit feminine for you though.

What about a beagle?

Needs a lot of exercise, apparently they have differing personalities - some are lazy but some are very energetic.

If you really want mental then go for a jack Russell.

We inherited a boxer from my son 1 month after he bought it as a christams present last year, fantastic dog with loads of character but it needs lots and lots and lots of excercise.
Wouldnt know what to do if he wasnt here now.

Springers can definately be small and mental, but also need a firm hand to put them in there place.

Very intelligent dogs.

Flush em out with the Springer, pick em up with the retriever
