Afternoon all!

So I currently drive a mk2 (98) mondeo V6 which i love. Its fast, spacious, and best of all, if i nail it into a tree, i can replace it for £700.

Only problem is: its a bit heavy, a bit lumbering.

What faster car can I get for say, 1.5-2k? (insurance excluded) An ounce of reliability would be good, size not important.

I do like 6k per year, so mpg is a very minor factor.

21, 4yrs driving, 2yrs noclaims, no points.

N.B. Twisties are great, but it needs to push you hard back into your seat in a straight line too.

The usual suggestions... MR2 GT or a Honda Prelude 2.2 Vtec, suppose they're not so pushy head in back of seat but great fun round the bends :)

Edit, scrap that, I vote for a Volvo 850 T5 - All the power and you could hit a wall at 100mph without dying :D

Errr, anyone mind if i pass on the volvo? not really my sort of car...

Prelude is this?

Not easily achievable for the money - it takes a fair amount of grunt to push you hard back in the seat.

Well, something close would be nice When the v6 kicks in on the mondy it feels good, and i want more of that :D

If you want something to push you back in your seat, I would reccomend a mini 1000 with shot engine mounts. I swear that would knock your teeth out!

The GTO really isnt that quick, especially a non turbo or an auto.

Civic VTi tbh

Well, the only thing i can do atm when presented with these choices is have a glance at parkers specs for 0-60, bhp and weight.

Any by that regard a vti is 7.9/157/1265 and a gto is 5.5/282/1730, so much faster but heavy...

Just try and avoid the 4-wheel steer if you can though. It's fine when it works, and can even be quite handy, but it's a pain when it goes wrong, and weighs a fair bit too.

4WS problems are quite rare - granted going to Honda for replacement parts makes it expensive, but parts are available from PreludeUK quite cheaply. 4WS really makes it nice for blasting around B-roads :)

BB4's (non-4WS models) are a bit rarer, and a bit more sought after, so command a bit of a price premium over a BB1 (4WS) model.

None of the cars listed are ideal to run on a budget apart from maybe the prelude. How are you for running costs?

Shouldnt be a problem - the reason the budget is low is I dont want to own a car I cant scratch without crying...

Just how bad are some of the choices??

92-96 Prelude 2.2 VTEC's are from about £700-£2200, depending on condition.

Being a Honda, they'll be very, very, very reliable providing they're not neglected. Mine had done 178k before my accident last year, and still running strongly - if anything, maybe even UP on power slightly over standard!! Regular oil changes will keep it running sweetly :)

Any questions you want to ask about Preludes, feel free to catch me on MSN, or take a look @ PreludeUK
