Spec me a first gaming PC for teenager

If you want up be able to overclock you will need a k series cpu you a z490 motherboard so this should be considered on the choise of board.

There are cheaper alternatives if you want to consider.

The CPU will remain at stock, I don't remember the last time I overclocked a CPU.

Ideally I'd like an Asus motherboard if possible.

No offense intended, but if you are so entirely set on it has to be this brand not the other and wont ever overclock then maybe you should just go and look for a premade? The big high street chain that sells Kormas, Vindaloos and Biriyanis has some good options at your price point.

Example: HP OMEN 25L Gaming PC - Intel® Core™ i5, RTX 2060, 1 TB HDD & 256 GB SSD

First off, yeah don't put a £200 gpu in UNLESS you're happy to upgrade pretty soon. Game machine = Wax as much as possible on the gpu, everything else comes second!
+buy 2nd hand if happy to, this'll avoid losing the most cash if you're doing the upgrade soon route.

I usually find around 50% of the budget for gpu is best, so you should be looking at a MINIMUM of an AMD 5700xt (£350ish) or 2070s (£500ish).
-Theres not much above those. 2080s @£650 is barely faster.
-I have NO idea what's up with the bonkers pricing on ocuk atm (£580 for a 5700xt?!?!) but i'm sure you could find one for £350.
"Tom Clancy" isn't too much help as that's a massive list of games, many are graphically intensive though and 5700xt will manage +60fps @ 1080p.

---

Mickeyflins build looks ok, other than gpu (he did say why a £200 gpu) and psu (I'd prefer 750w with the way gpus are going now - eg rtx3080 recommends 750w),
but it's still a dead end, feature missing intel build at the end of the day.

I haven't recommended anything intel in years, it doesn't look great tbh... A ryzen 3500x would be:
-cheaper (even with an x570 mobo)
-offer PCIe 4.0 (likely important for next gen gpus/ssds),
-AND most importantly: later on have the option to drop an absolutely bada** cpu in there...
Buuuuuut you dont want AMD for some reason... likely you've never had one and youre confused about AMD gpu reputation, their cpus have always been great.

So yeah IMO...
a) buy Mickeyflinns suggestion (with better gpu/psu)

or, my rec:

b) go AMD!!
£130 ryzen 3500x
£100/£140 any b550 / x570 mobo (*apart from x570 MSI ones!*)
£55 some cheap 3200mhz ddr4 - eg corsair vengeance or team group
-
£90 1tb sdd (nmve or sata, doesnt really matter atm).
£40 2tb hdd
*ocuk do WD £150 blue bundle (1tb nvme ssd + 2tb hdd)*
or £100 for 500gb + 2tb hdd)
-
£50 case (antec, corsair, msi, all do descent cases below £50, just google and choose one).
£80 750w psu (superflower leadex III, corsair rm750/rm750x can all be had for around £80-£100,
----------
ttl=£545
ttl=£895 with 5700xt

P.S...
You've mentioned this is for an xmas present so I'd ignore the new gpus: amd 6800 or nvidia 30xx series as:
A) even if you COULD order one now (you cant) you likely wouldn't get it till late jan/feb, let alone before xmas! :D
B) prices are so overinflated you won't get one for anywhere even near £500 anyway.

Okay I have decided that I am going to order this next week, without the 1660 which doesn't seem to exist. As a compromise I will order the 10400 instead of the 10400F, as the 10400 has integrated graphics and will allow me to wait for a graphic card after Christmas. Not ideal, but it's the best of a bad situation.

Now the PSU isn't in stock, so I'm looking an alternative to the aforementioned Corsair TX650M 650W 80 Plus Gold Semi Modular Power Supply (CP-9020132-UK), without compromising on quality.

What do people think of my approach? Could I buy another suitable Nvidia graphic card next week without blowing the budget out of the water?

This is a bit of a bump, but it's for the same lad.

I've been tasked with speccing an upgrade, using the existing PSU and RTX 3060 graphic card.

Again, I'd like to stay with an Asus motherboard and Intel CPU. I'm going to push for 32GB of RAM and upgrade the M.2 SSD to 1TB, with the view to keeping the 1TB as spare. This should stop the need to reinstall games every so often and I think the extra RAM will help with gaming.

Not looking for budget parts, nor am I looking for top end components - get the job done and be reliable.

Currently using a Raijintek Themis Direct Contact CPU Cooler to keep things cool, but I don't think this will fit an LGA 1700 socket so I'm also looking for a similar air cooled HSF.

Thanks for any suggestions in advance.

Can you restate what the PC specs are right now?

I assume it is still only used for gaming?
Yeah, it's just teenage stuff really - gaming, web browsing.

The CPU is currently a i5-10400 sat in an Asus TUF Gaming B460-Pro (Wi-Fi) motherboard with 16GB of DDR4-3200. I think they plan to sell these parts or give them to his Dad.

I should add that they are currently sniffing after an i5-13600, but for the sake of price a 13400 might be wiser.

I also forgot to add that the budget is around £600, less if possible.

This is a 13400 build:

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £469.93 (includes delivery: £0.00)

If you can find it on offer, then the 12600K/KF might be better value than the 13400, you can also pair it with a Z690 or B660 board if they're available cheaper too.

The stock cooler is adequate for a 13400, but with a 13600K/KF you'd need something like the peerless assassin. FYI: the 13600 non-K/KF is not the same CPU as the 13600K/KF.

Do you have any recommendations for an Asus motherboard, preferably with Wi-Fi as a backup for internet.

In what way do the non-K/F differ from K/F? I understand that that the K-series allow for overclocking (something I don't want to encourage right now) and the F-series doesn't have a built-in GPU.

There are two main differences: one is overclocking and the other is the stock power limits (K CPUs have higher ones). The K CPUs also don't come with coolers.

The 13600 and 13600K are more different than usual. The 13th gen non-K i5s are all more like a 12th gen CPU and don't have Raptor Lake's L2 cache. This harms their gaming performance, though their productivity performance is improved versus 12th gen due to the use of E-Cores (since only the 12600K has E-Cores of the 12th gen i5, whereas the 13400 has 4 and the 13500 has 8).

@Tetras
What are your thoughts on the Asus ROG Strix B760-F Gaming WIFI (LGA 1700) DDR5 ATX Motherboard? I'm trying to stick with what I know and trust and that's Asus.

Edit:
I've been playing around with items as it seems OcUK as a lot of stock I want is pre-order. :(

£200 (incl. VAT)
£150 (incl. VAT)

Due to various complications, I've finally been given the go ahead to order as soon as I like.

Can somebody please sanity check the below and recommend any changes? Looking to stay Intel, Asus motherboard and 32GB RAM - my dilemma is DDR4 or DDR5, as I only see DDR4 Asus B760 motherboards in stock with OcUK right now. :(

I'd rather have a cheaper DDR5 board like the DS3H, or MSI Gaming Plus, but if you have to stick with Asus, then it is fine. FYI: The 13500 often isn't much more than the 13400 w/IGP and has 4 more E-Cores and a better IGP.
