Looking for a new light for my bike.

Currently got the Cateye EL220 with the Cateye LD-600 rear.

Wanting to replace the EL220 as its not that bright imo.

So question is, buy another EL220 or get a different light?

Been looking at:

Cateye ABS10 10W but its about £50.

Whereas another EL220 is £25.

What would you say, pair the EL220 with anothe EL220 or a different light? Or a rechargeable?

Thankyou for any input!

Parks, off road etc.

But will be used for atleast 30 mins on road (back home etc).

But mostly through forrests and stuff.

Will it be used on completely unlit tracks etc? If so, save your pennies for a while and get a Hope LED - it's fantastic! Pretty expensive, perhaps £175 for the basic model, but it gives a really crisp white light with great range.

Dont really wanna spend that much.

Will have some lighting around, but not pitch pitch black.

Would prefer to not spend that much though.

Will be used with minimal light.

Any ideas for £50ish?

for off road use on forest tracks and I assume some singletrack you will be looking to spend more than £50. a 100 is ideally where you would start to find reasonable light sets that dont weigh a ton and last a sensible amount of time with plenty of light.

Niterider Minewt is a reasonable package for local riding on trails you know and is light and lasts a long time, although it costs 125 quid or maybe a touch less.

For your pricerange or near enough maybe a set of electron lights? can be had for £70.

It is really worth the inital outlay for a good set of lights, its not somthing you wont to have to worry about or faff with when out on the trails.

edit: didnt see that bit above, though I still stick with my advice. Night riding rules!

Yeah, well im thinking about getting a second light, and using the EL220 at the same time, would that make much difference?

Any links to some lights?

Preferably i would like it for around £50 though..

two poor lights wont make much difference at all.

not bad for 50 but paying the extra now will mean you get a much better system in the long term, I still think the niterider minewt would suit you best.

Our club has sets of them for people who want to try night riding, they work reasonably well. Very heavy and this is the main reason a lot of us bought our own sets, but they are good enough for local trails.

dual would give better penetration, but for the ridng you describe a single lamp would be sufficent. Try a local bikeshop and see if they will lend you some sets to try out?

lumicycle

yes expensive, but nothing works or lasts like these, i have had mine for about 6 years and only replaced one lamp/bulb. these really are the puppies KPs I have the NiMH which was all they did when i bought, no regrets!!

Im not ALWAYS gonna be riding in the dark, but if i do iwant to see, i would probably do it..twice a week, in near pitch darkness.

^ EL-530 won't be bright enough IMO. Maybe if you used a few, it may work.

Hmm, £50.

Not enough for HID, so forget that.

For incan, get at least 25W if you can. Also, make sure your battery will last at least 30 mins.

I made my own out of CREE leds, but LED's still aren't that cheap, and I had to use quite a few to get a good amount of light, which isn't cheap. :)

Check out CRC, they have some good offers. ;)

If your not in pitch darkness then you can get away with less....

I guess 10w would just about be ok in total darkness, if you didn't go too fast. ;)

2 x 10w would be much better... sometimes you can upgrade bulbs to 20w or 25w which might be worth looking into.
