Spec me a Frying Pan!

Buy a Le Creuset.

they may be French, but they are the best in the world.

My Ma still has some that are about 40 years old, and they still work perfectly.

Meyer Anolon Professional - that I always recommend in the bi-weekly 'spec me a pan' thread, nothing better for the money.

I have a handy flowchart I use when I shop for frying pans. I find it handy to print out a copy and bring it with me while I shop

there's two "no's" on the will food fit :o

Also I hope in some way seeing my name on here subconsciously makes you all suggest tefal :p

Non Stick cheapy tefal is perfectly good 99% of the time, even good for steak also long as you ensure it's very hot first., like oil about to catch fire hot.

More expensive pans are thicker and so have a more uniform heat distribution, which are technically better but unless you really start getting enthusiastic about cooking I personally wouldn't bother.

What on earth are you lot smoking, you let the wife buy the cooking things surely :D

Never trust and woman to buy any kind of hardware, ever. kitchen equipment included. She will will just buy junk or 200 quids worth of overpriced garbage from john lewis, because 'it had a nice box'.

Minus 50 man points for you, brother.

You wouldn't want to heat a Teflon pan to that sort of temperature it causes the coating to degrade so it will loose its non stick properties and can cause a condition known as Teflon flu when it releases vapors into the air when over heated

Ahh, ok, didn't know that, surely they should come with a health warning... care to link me to the science?

Thanks for the tip. Didn't realise!

The suggestions are just backup what I had decided now. The £15 Jamie Oliver one will do for now, if I find it's not suitable it'll be the £60 French cast iron one - I might wait for an offer on it.

I'm now worried about Teflon Flu. I like to get the frying pan hot, to the point where the oil is smoking. It's not unusual for the contents to catch fire.

Is that too hot for Teflon? I haven't the faintest idea if it's near 300 degrees or not.

Sainsburys have two Tefal pans for £18; one big, one small.

I've just bought them because my old one is the same one and it's lasted years of abuse and being put through the dishwasher.

Edit: they won't last long if you smoke them up though.

I couldn't fathom out Tefal's ranges. I went with the £15 Jamie Oliver because I seemed to be getting a big discount on it, but they have about 4 or 5 different ranges and they don't seem to say which ones are better or what the difference is. The "Jamie Oliver Hard Enamel 26cm Frying Pan" that I got on auction for £15, Sainsbury's have at £24

Cast iron goodness!

Great heat retention but everything sticks to it, not sure if you can non-stick cast iron stuff.

Yes you can have a google for seasoning a pan, they are a complete pain in the arse until you either season it or use it a fair amount without cleaning it using washing up liquid and a scourer
