I rather like some of the images of the Lone Wanderer (Fallout 3 PC) and Dogmeat (a dog you can have as a companion NPC in Fallout 3).

You need some retro promo / box art.

There is a fantastic thread on the LucasArts forum dedicated to creating what your asking for from retro Lucas Games. e.g. Monkey Island, Indiana Jones, Loom etc.

Thanks for all the ideas so far guys. Thinking of maybe getting 3 to go side by side...

So far I think a Zeus ex one would be good, the monkey island one posted earlier maybe and something else... I am thinking something battlefield or halo. Or both!
