Hi,

I am looking to move back over to windows. Currently have a 2011 MBP. I have a max budget of £1300. Don't mind screen size and the only game I play is WoW. Ideally want to play on max graphics so what is out there which can meet my criteria?

Had a look but Im unsure what to go for heard some issues with msi, alienware and asus (heat?).

Thanks.

Just to update this as my quest for a gaming laptop continues. I have come across the aorus 13.9 x3 plus v5-cf2 this has a 6700 intel cpu and 970m with 512 nvme drives 16gb ram.

I have also come across the msi gt72s 17 dragon edition with 6820hk cpu 980gtx and 512gb ssd 32gb ram on an auction site.

I'm unsure on which to go for. I like the portability of the aorus but the power aspect of the msi is appealing. I only play wow so I don't need anything to intense. Reading about msi customer services has made me think hard about the msi. I've also read that the power point can be temperamental.

What would you guys suggest as the msi can be had for about £1k and aorus for 1.2k.

You can grab a pretty cracking deal on our ROG Strix GL702VM at the moment ** No Competitors **

Hi I did look at the asus laptops but I was put off by the temperatures being quite high from the reviews I read.

I'm sorry OcUK. Please forgive me.

If you can stretch that little bit further, I'd recommend the MSI GS63VR-6RF which can be had for around £1400.00 elsewhere (15.6", i7 6700HQ, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD+2TB HDD, GTX 1060 6GB). I was torn between this, the MSI GS73VR and also the Asus GL702VM as listed above. Originally I very nearly bit the bullet on the GL702VM due to the attractive price (even had it in the basket, ready to pay), however after a couple of days of deliberation I decided to abandon it due to the reports I've read up on where other owners of the laptop have experienced overheating issues when gaming - as you also mentioned.

I then decided to go for the MSI GS73VR-6RF afterwards but returned it after a couple of days as it felt too big for my liking, and now I've settled on the GS63VR-6RF instead which for me looks and feels spot on. Very light & sleek, fantastic keyboard, very quick and excellent gaming capabilities with having the GTX 1060 6GB.

One thing to bear in mind is that these new laptops with Pascal cards do tend to run on the warm side when compared to previous generations, even with the big & bulkier models with more room for cooling - it is known that CPU / GPU temps will hoover around the 80c mark when run at the max.

Just wanted to update this; I bought a dell outlet Alienware 15r3 7700hq with a 1060 off the bay at a decent price(unused and still boxed with the seals intact). All was working fine until I flashed the bios with the latest version.

It's bricked itself and nothing I do can bring it back to life. Just my luck huh.

Dells warranty is usually spot on though. i'm assuming you've got the premium/next business day one?
You might well end up with a brand new unit.

Hi yes it has one years premium warranty. I contacted dell and they're sending an engineer out on Tuesday to me. They're suspecting it's a motherboard failure. I've tried pretty much everything I could, cmos reset, battery disconnection, ram removal, hdd removal and troubleshooting like that. Nothing works so I'm certain motherboard is dead.

The tech was happy I tried everything and even the stuff he suggested to do I had already done it. I'll explain in more detail once the laptop is fixed as to what my issues were in a separate thread. I'm certain it's a bios update issue on the kabylake processors though the tech said there are no known issues and it can sometimes happen. Which for me isn't a good enough excuse on a premium laptop. No warranty you'd end up forking out £100's.

unfortunately ever major laptop manufacturer has random issues and failings like this. It's why i choose dell/alienware over clevo/sager/msi etc. I prefer to have someone come out to me with the part and fix it that day than send it off and hope i get it back 2 weeks later.

This ^^

Came to me to sort the power button on my Alienware, minor hassle but I saved 1K buying an Oulet model.

I had the exact same problem a few weeks ago. I flashed the bios and the firmware on the 1080, it died a day later. Dell replaced the motherboard, still didn't work, they came the day after and replaced the power button board. The motherboard was probably ok, problem is some people are now having issues with the 1080 firmware upgrade. I wont be flashing anything for a while lol

what firmware did you flash to? Which one are you running now?

That's the one thing I've always liked about Dell, they have a very quick turnaround when it comes to booking an engineer for a warranty claim.

My Dad owned an old XPS gaming rig around a decade ago, to which it totally packed in around two years or so later due to a suspected motherboard failure and on the day the fault was reported I'm sure the warranty had literally ran out by a couple of days. Luckily Dell still honoured the claim despite this and instructed an engineer to come out two days later and the motherboard was replaced on the spot.

One good thing I've read about them and in particular their outlet refurbished stock, the customer still gets a full warranty given as if it was a new product.

Dell support contacted me. Unfortunately part isn't in stock as of this moment so the engineer won't be visiting tomorrow. A bit of a bummer as I wanted to play some games tomorrow evening. They'll let me know and rebook once the parts are in stock. Normally a 2-3 day wait.

very annoying for you. If the promised part isn't in stock in a couple of days don't be afraid to start making your voice heard.

Yeah it's not a problem. So far I'm impressed with the communication. Something which is hard to do these days from certain companies. Will see how it fairs this week.
