Spec me a gaming MONSTER!!

Its great checking up on this thread and finding so many replies! Seriously, thnks so much guys, your really helping me out by replying!!

Narrowed the cases down toooooo (And in no particular order :D )....

1) PC7+
2) Eclipse
3) PC-S80B - Waiting on that review Yewen :D
4) Thermaltake VA9000SWA Kandalf Aluminium Full Tower - Silver (CA-004-TT) - For some reason kinda like this case - £112.65
5) Thermaltake VB5001SNA Tai-Chi SuperMidi Tower - Aluminium - Liking this one for its design and the fact that its watercooled - £184.95

What do u guys think of the last 2 on my list ?

Regarding non-Tower related matters...

1) How important would it be to go for the extreme conroe edition (X6800)? Atm im looking at the E6600 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.40GHz which is around a third of the price and im pretty sure i could easily overclock it to a stable 3.0GHz.

2) Whats the main purpose of a Western Digital Raptor 74GB WD740GD 10,000RPM SATA 8MB Cache?? I can see its a faster Hard drive - curious to why so many ppl are speccing it in the forums?? Whats it mainly used for? Gaming/OS? Is it really that important?

3) Thinking about the Acoustic Energy Aego M 2.1 Speakers (Black) - Retail (SP-000-AE) - They seem to come highly reccomended. Would this be suitable for gaming or are 5.1 speakers a much greater improvement for the extra money?

Incase your curious this is what my shopping list is looking like atm..

I would get the 6600 and overclock it, you should easily make 3.0Ghz with that spec from what i've read. The 6800 will have the advantage that on overclocking that it will go further.

Having a 10,000 rpm raptor would be for the OS, applications and games. It will help increase load times. I've heard the seagate 320 drive operates almost as fast so it may not be necessary.

I've heard great things about those 2.1 speakers and would love you to buy them since I could do with another review . For me, the amount of speakers you get depends on the size of your room.

My opinion on all those cases apart from the pc7 is that they cost too much. I'd also be interested to know if the PC-S80B can take a ninja cooler since it seems to have two layered side doors to prevent noise.

I think you should be looking at a ATI card since you have a crossfire motherboard there. For crossfire you need to buy a master card and then a slave card in the same series.

Forgot to mention that ill be waiting 2 months before i buy this rig to make room for the new conroe mobo's. Because of this might go for an Sli one.

I'll let u know about the speakers ghostrider :)

Ladies and Gentlemen (Although admitidly theres probably a few more gentlemen :D ) I call upon your help once more!

My monster has grown!!!! It has become fat and plump under my ambitions of making the ultimate gaming Pc and now requires a bigger cage - Well bigger budget that is :p Due to making a little more cash this summer than i originally intended im raising my budget by £1000 - W00t!

The first thing to change is gonna have to be my moniter, lovely as it is i feel a nice new..

Dell Ultrasharp 2407WFP 24" Widescreen LCD Monitor - Midnight Grey (MO-009-DE) £649.95

Will be ideal for my setup.

Perhaps the next obvious choice would be an increase in my processor to the..

CP-130-IN Intel Core 2 DUO Extreme Edition X6800 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.93GHz (1066FSB) - Retail (CP-130-IN)
£659.95 £659.95

HOWEVER - This is literally £300 pounds more expensive than edition below, now unless the extreme edition has some amazing unique benefits which the other models dont pocess - i feel the extra money isn't worth the extra 0.26Ghz of processing power and could be better spent on other things E.g:

1) Amazing 5.1 sound system
2) Very good water cooling system
3) ****Insert Here Good Money Spending Option**** :p

2 More things which are on my mind are......
a) Whether to make use of the faster Raptor drives for Games/OS and if so to opt for the 74 (P.s would be great if someone could explain to me the main differences/benefits to the 16M cache as opposed to the 8M cache) or 150Gig option
b) Whether i should go for the:

) XFX GeForce 7950 GX2 Extreme Edition 1024MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (PVT71U-ZDF9) (GX-084-XF)
£389.95 £389.95

orrrrr

2) ATI Radeon X1900 ***Crossfire Edition*** 512MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-045-CO)
£254.95 £254.95
GX-053-HT HIS Excalibur ATI Radeon X1900 XT ICEQ 3 SILENT Heatpipe 512MB GDDR3 AVIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-053-HT)
£229.95 £229.95

Man what a toughy!!

Geforce -
Pros - Easier to use/Cheaper yet adequatly powerful/Option for Quad Sli - Though id probably rather get a DX10 card rather than go down this route
Cons - No AA + HDR :(

Dual ATI -
Pros - Probably a lil more powerful overall/HDR + AA/Supposingly better picture quality
Cons - Much higher power consumption/Louder/An extra £100

Not even gonna think about the 7900GTX Sli - Wayyyy to corrupt from what i hear!!

Send fourth your suggestions on how i can make the very most of this extra £1000 - The help you gave me last time really really helped me out!!!

Gonna post pics of my rig when its all complete :)

Thanks Again!!!

Cjay

P.s Come to think of it my desk area isnt that large so im not sure if 5.1 sound would be very practical - Might wanna spend that extra cash on other stuff

Jst so u guys know not necassarily gonna use the bad axe. Prob gonna wait 2 months for the new boards.

Dude, if you're spending that much and not doing phase cooling you're just being silly. Get the VapoChill rig suggested by helpimcrap and go set some SuperPi world records. :D

no offence but me thinks custom rigs are better.. not only that but i guess people like me will appreciate it more building a rig ourselves. I do anyway :)

Thanks Andy but i'm going to build my own rig so i can learn a little bit more about computers (Plus i think it will be fun :D ).

Anyone able to give any good advice on the questions i posed earlier??

Hi guys, crikey this spec is evolving!!!

Custom rigs are better and if you're gonna build it yourself to learn more then good on you mate!!!! BUT....... all our systems are custom built by me and/ or another member of out l33t tech team. Check out my own personal rig:

In answer to a few of your questions, the 7950GX2 is basically as good as 2 Radeons in crossfire and is much more stable. If you look around, ATi have had some driver and stability issues in crossfire of late but, to be fair, crossfire has emerged 18 months later than SLi and its probably the usual teething troubles in the months after a product launch. (BUT the 7950's are 10 times quieter than the 1900XTs.

I'd go for the cheaper conro and pocket the difference for a watercooling kit for sure. All conroes reportedly clock well and run very cool with much less voltage demands (an overclockers dream CPU) and a good WC kit will ensure this potential is maximised.

Large cache (16) on a HDD will only yield a noticable difference when doing things that involve shifting huge files around (e.g. video encoding)

The Raptors are blisteringly fast but, to be honest, a WD 2500SE 16Mb drive will be almost as quick due to the density of the platters and how tightly they pack the data (quicker seek times than most 1st gen SATA)

Hope this helps

just remember he's on a 20" tft, so i'm guessing 1680x1050 res? basically a single x1900xt will max it out tbh, 99% of games and almost all the latest games will run everything with ample fps at that res and 4/6xaa 16xaf pretty damned easily. i very very much doubt anything hugely more power hogging, game wise, will be out before G80/R600 cards are out so anything more than a single card on that monitor would be a waste. as would a X6800, you did well to choose the E6600.

now based on your budget i would say a new screen wasn't out of the question. if you bought a 24" tft with 1920x1200 res then you would be getting close to the point sli is very useful, but honestly there are some games like hl2 that will still run more than happily max'd out at that res, and some games, like fear where to run there you will easily want sli. so basically current screen don't bother with more than one card, then when the new cards come out take money saved and buy a new card which will easily deal with the next bunch of games easily. if you do upgrade screen then really, the 7950, even though i prefer ati cards right now, is just toooo much easier to use so grab one of them. everything else is personal choice tbh. any raid 0 is great IMHO for gaming/load times. sometimes i'll go mad and decide to use big drives sometimes small drives. for instance i think my conroe setup will be using 320gb seagate 7200.10's in raid 0 with another 300 for backup and dvd's for backup too. they are just stupidly fast, other systems i'll buy 2x80 or 120gb drives, normally maxtors or hitachi(they just work so well in raid) and again big back up drives.

EDIT:- i would just say, even though i said a 7950 instead of crossfire for ease of use, i wouldn't say it based on noise. ati's fan default speeds are beyond messed up, but run ati tool and you can change what speed fans run at any temp. under gaming x1800/1900 and even old x800xt's spin up to basically max speed, but even if i drop that down to 45-60% which is insanely quieter it doesn't increase temps much at all. also you can add silent zalman coolers for £20 a pop(i know more cost) but cool ever better, allowed better overclocking and are pretty much as quiet as you can get.

Actually..

Even tho i do have the budget and that i would find it fun to make a watercooling system? Is it actually worth it - i mean, will it significantly be better at cooling my system than my akasa Eclipse + 3 120mm ambers?

only thing i would change is the case - but thats just my preference

everything else looks fine... this really is going to be a gaming MONSTER :)

IMO i dont think WaterCooling is worth it - If you wanted some decent cooling id get VapoChill... But im sure other than what you have should be fine?

If not id just get a few high speed fans.. that should do it imo..
