Hi, I am building a pc solely for gaming after finding out that my old rig is not up to the job :P

I would obviously like a good cpu and gfx card, and the size of things like hard drive doesnt matter, 250gb upwards is fine, also I'm not looking for ssd, so don't spec that (Y)

Thanks in advance again!

So are you looking for just the case and everything inside it? You don't need any extras like monitor, speakers, mouse or keyboard?

yeah, just wanting the case and components. thanks so much for the quick response icey, but is amd the best solution for gaming? i'm used to intel, but that cpu you've specced does seem pretty good. Also is crossfire/SLI a good idea? was also veering towards buying nvidia, as I'm not a big fan of catalyst control center and the rest of the ati tools.

Yeh, the 955 performs well in games and is a good CPU overall. Whilst the i7 is better, it will cost you more and won't be a lot better than the 955 in games. When it comes to encoding and stuff like that, the i7 leaves the 955 for dead.

Also you may have had a bad experience with ATi, but I assure you, as will many others, that they provided very good gaming cards at reasonable prices at the moment. They offer a lot more bang for buck and the nearest Nvidia equivilant of the 4890 is the GTX275. They perform similarly, but the 275 will set you back at least £35 more.

Anyone know what kind of fps rates I can get from these two systems, respectively on Crysis:Warhead, maxed out at 1280x1024

Really looking for 55+, my current spec runs on medium, without aa at around 22fps.
Just as a side note to save you guys time, won't be needing a DVD drive as I already have one.

Well the FPS will be pretty much similar (same GPU) on the 2 systems other than just comparing which CPU is more powerful, the i7 920 or the AMD Phenom II X4.. We all know which is better so that's what will give you that extra edge and a few more FPS over the Phenom II.. But I don't know exactly what FPS you will get unless you check some benchmarks.

done so, thanks for the feedback - as stated, the gpu really is the most important component here, is there a better gpu i can get for the money? i am actually increasing my budget to 850, as it seems a more reasonable price for a good computer.

that card looks like a real beast! will those fit in any of the cases specced, and will it also require anything else? can someone spec me a machine with an i7 and amd respectively and this, obviously with a case which will fit. Really appreciate this guys, thanks very much - was nearly about to blow 1300 on an msi gt725, probably not a good idea!

Yes, by a fair margin.

Crysis Warhead

Hmm, I do feel a bit of a **** after noticing the 8fps difference. What kind of clock rates would I be able to overclock the i7 920 too? and will it be safe, considering I probably will make a considerable ****-up doing it :P
