Built my boy his first gaming rig this evening and I've ended up with major child disappointing results :(

Spec is

Q9450 @ 3.5ghz
8 gig ram
X1900xtx
Antec450w psu

See what I did wrong crap gpu

What's the best bang for buck gpu for playing at 1600x1200? That will support dx10 and cost not too much?

You could pick up something in the members market, £25-60.00 would get an 8800gt/9800gt, gtx 260/275 or 280 etc, not sure on the ati/amd front though.

A nice 460 Should be a good fit depending on budget. Get them new for around £100, or on the MM your probably looking around £60-80

looking for something that will play all games, albeit at a lower settings than what i would be looking for (he's only 6 so graphics aren't the be all and end all in his world.

need something asap though, he keeps stealing my rig :)

I would be looking at a 460 or something high from the 2xx series like the 280. Not too clued up on what the older suitable AMD offerings would be however.

Perhaps even a 550Ti might suffice?

A good spot by Coupe - i would imagine this would plough through most/all 6 years+ age related games with no problems.

lol the problem is he wants to play games like saints row 3 and arkham city :)

trying to convince me to give him my pc :)

Isn't the 460 a bit of a power hog given it draws nearly as much a HD5870 (bearing in mind the PSU), you might want to get the 460 760mb model which uses a bit less. £50 gets you a second hand 5770 which walk all over your current card and won't be a problem to run on your PSU.

currently trying to convince myself that i really dont need a new ati 7xxxx and to give him my 6970 :)

so say a max budget of 80-100 or thereabouts

tried to fire up SR3 last night on his rig and it wouldnt even load :(

A refurbished or second hand 460 would seem an obvious contender for ~£80.

Your PSU should manage it if it's running on all cylinders...
