I owe my mate a favour, and since he is a whisky lover, I am buying him a good whisky. His particular favourites are Highland Park and Jura, both around £25 for a 70cl bottle.

Does anyone have a recommendation for another good whisky in the same class or slightly better up to £30 spend?

Talisker is around £25 atm in Tesco which is a really good whisky for the price and should be welcomed if he enjoys Highland Park and Jura but it is a more substantial hit in the mouth. Balvenie Doublewood is usually around £28 in ASDA/Tesco (though does sometimes creep up to £34ish) and is easily the best Speyside for that money. It's a lot smoother than HP/Jura/Talisker but he'll like it.

I'd advise sticking to supermarkets and mass produced bottles for this sort of price, you'll be lucky to get anything as nice for the price.

The Glenfiddich 18 is good, and I suppose he'll like the sweetness. But I just don't think it has quite enough body to make it worth the price. If you're wanting to hit £40, then the Glenlivet 18 is a better buy imo. Plus, it's on offer for £38 (down from £46) in Tesco.

Plus, the majority of people down south pronounce it wrong and it really gets to me. ;)

What's the incorrect pronunciation? I need to know for the next time we're on mumble.... :p

Looks like I'm going to end up with two to try. A few days with wifeys away and I think we'll soon polish them off. Balvenie Doublewood and Caol Ila look to be good. Just need to source the Caol now. Sainsburys have the Balvenie on offer at the moment I think.

Which Jura is it he likes?
If he likes smoky/peaty my vote will always goto Laphroaig I really enjoy both their regular offering and the quarter cask stuff.

The Balvenie Doublewood I've also heard good thing about, you really want Stan to pop his melon in here he's a fountain of info.

Laphroaig is quite a step up from the likes of Jura or Highland Park on the peaty/smoky front. Personally, I love it and, at just over £30 for a bottle of Quarter Cask, I think it's the best whisky you can buy for that sort of money by a long way. It isn't to everyone's taste however due to the intensity of the smoke/peat. If you want to play it safe, have a look on the Whisky Exchange website and search using the 'under £30' filter - there are a lot of very good whiskies for the money. Here's a few picks I've made from a quick perusal:

An Cnoc 12 Year Old
Ben Nevis 10 Year Old (my parents' favourite)
Glen Garioch Founders Reserve
Auchentoshan 12 Year Old (very nice Lowland malt)
Tobermory 10 Year Old
Aberlour 12 Year Old / Double Cask Matured
Knockando 1997 / 12 Year Old
Benriach 12 Year Old
Old Pulteney 12 Year Old
Balvenie 12 Year Old DoubleWood
Glenrothes Select Reserve
Singleton of Dufftown 12 Year Old

And a few at just over £30:

Cardhu 12 Year Old / Single Malt
Bruichladdich Rocks
Royal Lochnagar 12 Year Old
Tomintoul 16 Year Old
Caol Ila 12 Year Old (A bit more pungent than Jura but not as lively as Laphroaig - a good introduction to Islay malts and one of my personal favourites in this price range)
