Hello,

Last night when using my pc my pc crashed see http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18137407

And I'm looking for a new graphics card.

Setup -

Gigabyte GA X48T DQ6 mobo
Intel Q9550 cpu at 3.4Ghz
4gb corsair ram
Win xp 32bit

What would be the ideal gpu for this set up. Budget isn't an issue. Just want something to run Cod4 and a bit of AutoCAD.

Replacing a Nividia 9800GT.
 
I would suggest the ASUS 5770 CuCore due to its 3 year warranty and overclocking friendly BIOS. Its a good card, a good deal faster than the 9800GT and one of the best price/performance cards on the market today.

Speaking of warranty, does your faulty 9800GT not have any warranty left?
 
Will have to check tonight when i get home to see if there is any warranty left on the card, and i guess a call to OCuk would be on the cards if i can get it RMA'd if there is any.

Also a note on the two cards that have been listed above they say they are DDR5? I know my mobo takes DDR3 ram at least so wouldn't there be a compatiblity issue?

DDR5 is the ram on the gfx card and doesn't relate in anyway the the ram the mobo takes. ;)

I've only really seen i7 setups mentioning the DDR5 graphics cards so thought my mobo would be too old school for those card types. We'll see how i get on tonight once i check out the warranty issue if there is one and if it can be RMA'd before taking the plunge on a new card completely. :)
 
Man, if budget isn't an issue get a 5850 (and overclock it). If you like COD4 and eventually end up playing BC2 you'll be happy for the extra juice. If budget is an issue, then a 5770 is great value and pretty decent performance in most games.
 
+1 5850 For the future! add a second when there £120 = win
5770 is umm not bad but you would prob have to replace it to soon and 5850s are at a nice price at the moment i'm tempted myself.
 
Not sure why a 5770 is being suggested for somebody who says budget not really an issue!?? That rig is crying out for a 5800 series card. Even at todays inflated prices, the 5850 is still the sweet spot for bang for buck, so get one of those.

That's being sensible. Putting that aside, if budget really is no concern, then the sky is the limit, although it starts to make less sense the higher up you go given your rig (or just less sense regardless to be honest:))

Lol, yeah. I was initially going to post "Get a 5970!" but then looking at his uses it seemed a bit overkill.

I realise he says he has no budget, but I assume he has a budget for food and clothing - so not going crazy and buying an overspecified GPU doesn't make a huge amount of sense.

I agree that the 5800 series is great, and if the OP reckons he is happy with the price then they are a good option. However, the suggestions for a 5770 are good ideas, they are great bank-for-buck cards and significantly faster than the 9800GT he was previously using. Considering the OP was asking for a replacement (not an upgrade) then it would be a good card to choose.

Dont worry I'm minted :D

My main uses as I've stated are a bit of Cod4, some 3D work on AutoCAD and Photoshop for my photographs. Nothing spectacularly hard working on the graphics card but I like to run things as low as possible so there isn't too much loading on each part.

I thought from what I've read here and on other forums that there isn't much point overspeccing a graphics card cos if the rest of the system cant keep up then it suffers 'bottle necking?' and therefore doesn't perform as well as say a slightly lower spec card which fits the system fine?
 
This may not be needed now. I've phoned up OCuk and I've to send it in for inspection then off to ASUS for possible repair / replace. If i dont get the same spec card back i could get a credit notice or equivalent priced card as a replacement. The card still has a year and a half of warranty left out of the original 3 years.

I had to RMA my mobo shortly after I built my pc, think it was around 3 weeks after sending it to OCuk then back to manufacturer. So hoping that it will come back sharpish. The laptop I'm using is now about 5 or 6 years old so cant really do the stuff i want to :(

Well, after sending off my 9800GT 6 weeks ago (sent back to manufacturer on the 5th of may) it still hasn't arrived back so over the weekend I bought an ATI Radeon HD5770 from Higadeb from the MM which arrived today so happy with that. No doubt when i do get my replacement card from OCuk it'll go into the MM to sell :D
