Hi there, decided i'd like to learn guitar, well teach myself anyway. Just wondered a couple of things, is it easier to learn on electric or acoustic? How much should I be spending on one or the other?
Ideally I want an instrument that'll last a pretty long time, sound good and look reasonably good. Just wanted a few suggestions, thanks.

It is easier to learn on electric as you dont need to press the strings so hard, especially helps when learning barre chords. An acoustic would help build up your calousses quicker, but I'd say just get whatever you want to play. Although an electric will cost you more as you need an amp etc.

My first acoustic was a Yamaha for around £100, it was ok but the sound is poor compared to a more expensive solidtop. Check out tanglewood, they make decent acoustics for reasonable price. Go to a proper music shop and try some out and make sure its got a decent setup with a low action that will help you as a beginner.

With regards to electric or acoustic, just ask yourself the question:

Which instrument do you listen to most in your favourite music?

I can't really recommend a begginner acoustic, but be prepared for a barage of 'Buy a Yamaha Pacifica 112' from just about everyone regarding an electric. Quite right they are too.
