So... £300 ish...
FOR!! metal :)
Looking at the ESP viper 100... Any opinions on that?

Cheers,
Ash

I'd take a look at some Schecter's for that price (£300ish should get you one I think).

I wouldn't get a guitar with a floating bridge that is as cheap as £300 as it's bound to be rubbish, unsuitable for metal and annoying for a beginner.

I'd look at something with a fixed bridge or string through body then if you want to drop tune (which you'll definately be wanting to do for a majority of the songs I presume you'll be wanting to be playing) then a fixed bridge/string through guitar will make this a doddle.

SidewinderINC will tell you more about Schecter's when he sees this thread :)

I agree the Schecters are excellent value as are some lower end Ibanez models....but as Andelusion already said avoid any floating trems at that price!
A fixed bridge is a lot easier to learn on play and maintain for beginners!
Even top floaters like Edge pro and standard Floyd Rose systems have to be set up correctly or you will get nothing but problems!
If you can stretch your limit a little I would also look at the budget range PRS guitars with fixed bridges as they play very well.

The Viper 100 has a fixed bridge and no trem doesn't it?
I'll have a look at the schecters now...

Cheers! :)

meep!

well, i din't see this thread (A5H was in my ignore list for something from ages and ages ago...) but i jumped in today to see whats goin down!..

well for a budget of £300 i wouldnt bother with Schecters, you need to spend at least £400 to get a schecter worth playing, the "cheaper" ones just feel pap to play!

when i say cheaper ones, i mean the 006 "deluxe" which is far from deluxe!

i think the best Schecter for metal right now is probably the HellRaiser Avenger (the string thru body version of Synester Gates' new guitar)

getting Hardtail or FR bridge all depends on one single thing - how many guitars are you likely to have in total??

if its 1 - 2, then get a hardtail, if its 3 or more then it doesnt matter.

i say this for a few reasons;
i play pretty much everything, from attempting satriani (haha) and malmsteen (even bigger haha) to playing pantera and sabbath. and then i play older stadium rock such as aerosmith, Guns n Roses, etc. etc.
because of this, i have plenty of different string guages and tunings!

if i just had my ibanez i'd be up the creek really! because changing anything on a floyd rose is time consuming, so i have to keep the same guage strings on it, because then i can change strings with ease!

the cheaper (£300) LTD guitars are pretty good for the value, much better than the cheaper Schecters from what ive played. but i wouldnt be able to recommend much in the way of an LTD guitar other than the viper range.

what type of "metal" are you reffering to? new (not Nu) metal, which is just noise? Old metal, which is kickass noise!, or Avenged Sevenfold type stuff? which some people consider metal *shrug*

need more info :)

I just bought an epiphone les paul standard...try it out, it really is much better than people say!

The 24.75" scale length on a Les Paul or SG model isn't as good as on a Strat type 25.5" scale length for keeping tight string tensions while detuned. Then again, Tony Iommi kept a set of 8s in C tuning on an SG, so it can be done. Bet they felt like a set of elastic bands though. ;)

I'd say a fixed bridge Ibanez, ESP or a Schecter (as others have already said, many times).

Or...what about one of these?

And I love the shape of these. :D

i think it was some of your opinions or the way you put them across in a thread in GD maybe, it was ages ago heh, no hard feelings eh.

well EMG's would be fine for the heavier stuff like that, definately.
but i would still prefer a set of seymour duncans or Dimarzios in there any day!

the SH-2n Jazz is a goodun, played around with one of those for a while. and the SH-8 Invader has some serious push!

and as for the BC Rich, dont even bother unless its an NJ Series or above!

Sorry, who makes the SH's?
What do you think to that EX? Seems a very cheap price...

Seymour Duncan make those.

have a look round both the seymour duncan and the dimarzio website before you buy a guitar... check what sounds you like out of theirs, as they'll do good clean tones too :p

Aren't they out of my price range though?
I liked the sound of my friends MH50 and it only has the cheap ESP pickups... So anything along those lines will do me...
The EMGs on that ESP I put up before would be alright?

Sorry, I'm really new to this :(

Thanks for the help! Appreciate it :)

Thanks mate.
So would you buy that, if you had my limit, and wanted to play metal? :)

well, ive never actually played that guitar so i cant say that for definate!
I emailed ESP ages ago to ask about their neck specifications as i was looking at buying an actual ESP (Not LTD) from germany for £995 and i got good return times for my emails to them so they do care about the customers!

it has an Agathis body (not sure what type of wood that even is?!) and those EMGs are the cheapest ones you can buy, but they'll still sound more metal than a plain set of unbranded buckers that would go in..

try one out at a music shop is all i can say now :)

Tis all about the pickups man...

Seymour Duncan Invader or Livewire Metal
EMG 81/85 or straight 81's
