I know most of you refuse to acknowledge digital compacts as decent cameras, but seen as my skills as a phototgrapher and my budget are both very very limited, im after a new digital camera for all my snapping needs.

My Sony Cybershot has just given up the ghost, and my GF wants to get me a new camera for Christmas. Im looking for a compact digital camera that is small enough to stick in my pocket (i.e. not with large lenses), yet isnt rubbish. £200 - £300 is the budget and the most important feature to me is the best possible optical zoom I can get (I know this is difficult in compacts).

Any recomendations greatly recieved. I know nothing about cameras.

Not at all. I think you'll find most of us have a compact too. Can't lug a DSLR everywhere.

General consensus is to get something either Canon or Panasonic with compacts. We've had a few canons in the family and wouldn't have anything else.

Having a long focal length is more difficult with a tiny compact for obvious reasons, you're looking more at a bridge camera really. However this might fit the bill.

Friend has one, produces great shots with really nice colours. I'm sure you can find it in other colours too:)

Heres the thing. My mam always says that if you buy cheap, you buy twice. Get a lumix - at least a tz7 - and enjoy it :)

Cheers stupot, a lot of cameras in that group test.

Does anyone have a compact with a GPS module like in the TZ10? Is it actually any good, or is it just a meaningless gimmick?

You can get G11 for £360, probably the next best thing to a dslr. Bit over budget and maybe a bit too big? It would fit in a coat pocket.

BTW, are there any other decent compacts with a flip screen? Such a useful feature, but not many cameras have it.

Ok, sorry to dig up an old thread, but the camera got put on hold as moving out took priority. However, we are now back looking for a Camera.

£300 budget easy to use pocket camera with the best optical zoom possible. I see Panasonic how now moved on to the TZ18 and TZ20, but reviews suggest the touch screen and GPS are annoying gimmicks, and the TZ20 is over priced. Any other suggestions?

Cheers

I have a Panasonic ZX3 which I bought about 6 months ago, for a small camera it's not bad and it's very pocketable.

Not the best zoom available, but good for it's size.

Zoom is definately high on my list.

I notice in some reviews the TZ20 is loosing out to the new Sony compact Zoom? Anyone got one (cant remember the name)?

I bought my wife a TZ10 and it takes fantastic images with real punchy contrast. We turned the GPS off and I'm a little dissapointed with the video in comparison to my old canon ixus 800 in lower light but for images I'm more than happy.
