Having relied on my two Raptor X's for the past year then i have been 'out of the know' when it comes to hard drives.

What i need is a fast hard drive for my OS and programs, I have always gone for WD as they have never let me down.

Really I'm after the best bang for buck, read/write/seek times are what I'd prefer, and no I'm not wanting a velociraptor or an SSD.

Many thanks for any help

Raptors are still tough to beat, and you won't do it cheap. To get significant performance improvement you can either go RAID0 (You don't say whether your 2 X's were RAIDED), Velociraptors, SSD, or SAS. Bang for buck doesn't come into it at this performance level, if you want cheap go for a couple 640GB drives in RAID0.

how about Samsung F1's (1TB) ? only 70 quid each x 2 = £140 and they are ment to be very similar speed to the 10k raptors despite only being 7200rpm.... hmmm and a fraction of the price.

i cant make my mind up whether to go for 2 x 300gb raptors or 2 x 1tb F'1s. hmmmmm :s

Raptors were in Raid 0, im wasnt looking for something that would beat the performance of the raptors just something that would perform decently for say 100 notes

I went for a Samsung F1 after reading this review where it smashes the Raptor 150GB, should be with me Monday. Should be a hell of a stepup from the 3 year old Maxtor that's in there now :)

HDD was one if not the only thing bottlenecking my rig a bit.

Check out that review and see what you think.

It was reviews like this that I went for an F1, I can safely say I haven't been disappointed it's very quick and I never heard it make sound

For £70ish you can't go wrong with one

Well hard disk failure is an unavoidable risk, it may seem more F1s are failing but that might just be because most people are buying them now because they're so quick and cheap so you're bound to hear more about them when things go wrong. So I would think it's unlikely the failure rate is higher than any other brand

Yea same back in the Maxtor days, they were doing HDD's so cheap every man and his dog was buying them so you heard more about the failure rate.
