Spec me a Jalopy

Primera 1.6.

Reliable as hell, the insurance is very cheap, fair MPG. Over 100k miles on a Primera is nothing, many go past the 200k mark. Just try and get one with a full years MOT and you're laughing!

Old Volvos just bang on forever, usually come fully loaded and never go wrong. Probably pick up one for less than your budget too.

Then all ya gotta do is chop the springs and stick some wheels on :)

Too true,

Just got bitten on the last car which I got and had HGF within a few months...

So because of this you believe that all cars suffer head gasket failure around 100,000 miles? With that attitude the only car you are going to end up with is something that has only ever been driven around town and will be a hanging wreck, despite a low mileage.

With your budget, mileage should be a very low priority. Overall condition is of vastly greater importance.

I just got myself a 1999 Mitsubishi Charisma with 84K on the clock for £450 with a years MOT but no tax. Comes with alloys, aircon, cruise control etc and a full service history.

You can get Mk2 mondeos for the same money these days too, don't worry if they are touching over 100K miles. Larger cars will give you rock solid reliability for far lower cost. MPG will be more than offset by the hundreds of pounds cheaper it is to buy than a smaller car.

If you don't mind the image you can't get much better. Butbthey aren't generally small :)
