What I do is use LEFT ALT + LEFT SHIFT to switch between UK (EN) and Japanese Input (JP), when I have the JP language initialised I then use LEFT ALT + ` (the key above TAB and under ESCAPE), that way I can switch between Direct Input and Hiragana mode. You will have to manually select any of the half-width inputs though it is 99.999999999999% highly unlikely you'll ever touch that.
As you have a US layout you might have the same layout as the Direct Input mode if you're using a standard keyboard, but just in case I would switch back to EN.
